So I was thinking about getting another ACNL cartridge, mostly to have a cycle town. But for those of you that have two or more ACNL games going, what else do you use them for? I don't know if I could fully invest in two whole towns when I spend so much time on my one town alone haha :)

Definitely the number one reason for me getting a second cartridge was having more villagers. There's just so many to like...
Also, different town layouts change your experience of the game entirely! I'm currently running two towns, and while it is a lot of work, it's worth it. :)

I got one with the intention of making a second permanent town, got so far and then got distracted/lost motivation. Part of it was because I still had stuff to finish on my main town. I've used it as a cycling town but honestly I probably would hold off on getting one just for that. The plaza has slowed down the last couple of weeks in particular, maybe wait until after the update to decide on buying one if that is your intention for it. Although I found that to be more difficult to keep up with than a proper town.
Having a second town is brilliant for being able to experience more villagers. When this new update comes or I intend to get a whole different bunch of villagers for the second town, and I can still go back and see my favourites in my first town anytime I want :)
Plus you can try out new/different things. I'll try out a theme this time.

I would think that a good reason to have a second town is a second main street and pool of shop items. Also two premium items at Re-Tail. Basically, an opportunity to find more items and make more money if you're so inclined to do so.

I've had a second cartridge for a while but haven't used it. I should probably start up a second town for the reasons listed above. xD

I guess there are some positives in having several towns. You can experience more villagers. If you like landscaping and design, you can carry out more ideas. You can use different play styles t.ex. one town to relax in one to be more serious about, time travel in other town and play day by day in the other one. Also if you've already done a lot/most there is to do in one town, you can have more to do by buying a new copy. And as you mentioned, it can be used as a cycle town or a town where you can grind items to sell to others.

As for me, I kind of regret buying a second copy. I find I can't stay interested in two towns at the same time. I always neglect the other one while playing in the other. I thought it would be nice to be able to meet more villagers and design two different towns but I just can't do it. Mighta been a different story if I had made more progress in my first town before buying the second one, then I would've had different things to concentrate on in each town. Now there's the same stuff to do in the both of them. It's just too much work. There's always one town that ends up attracting me more than the other. I mean, I guess it's pretty nice to have a second copy in hand whenever I feel like I want a lil change but other than that it's not much use to me personally.

A second (or more) ville , along with another 3Ds, gives a safe place for temporary storage of "stuff" when resetting. For instance, when I saw one of my cartridges going south, I made as many train trips to another town and dropped as much as I could on the ground in front of the station. I couldn't save even half of the accumulated wealth but, when I replaced the bad cartridge, I had more than enough tools, furniture and whatever to build the replacement home without wasting time grinding for the....whatever. Also, what furbyq already posted. YMMV...

It gives you 10 more villagers to have, you also can have a different town layout and theme. C:

I have multiple 3DSes, so having more than one game comes in very handy. I can: spotpass amongst myself, have an unlimited supply of different perfect fruits, have more space to hold items, always have a place to foist Katie off on, etcetera and so forth...

I also love too many villagers to only have one town. Granted, Bunifrey gets the bulk of my attention, but I love all of my towns.

Now if you only have one system, it isn't AS beneficial to have multi-town ownership, but using a second copy as a cycling town would be nice, too.

Yes, many benefits that only increase with multiple 3DS() consoles(?) as long as the costs incurred doesn't cause a problem.
