What are some ways to give the illusion of a bigger town?

My river seems to take up a good chunk of the map and leaves some small areas of land that are hard to work with. I suppose my town could feel small because I'm used to navigating it... but I'm curious if anyone has some tips or suggestions! Certain pwp to avoid, landscaping tips, path size etc.

I feel like towns with a lot of trees and bushes seem bigger.
Whenever I visit dreams of foresty type towns it feels like a huge forest to me.

I agree with trees and bushes making your town seem a lot larger. I have two "forest" areas in my town leading up to a campsite and it feels like my town could go on for days whenever I walk through them.

- more trees
- light posts can take up too much space - use sparingly
- bushes add depth
- paths that wind here and there add a feeling of going on a journey
- houses spread out help make the town seem larger
- PWPs spread out as far as possible makes one have to walk from place to place

Don't use paths. My town feels a lot bigger without them honestly. Same with bushes and trees. Oddly the more bushes and trees you have, the more full your town is, the bigger it feels. Definitely agree with almost all the other comments. My villagers are overall in a line. This makes the town feel bigger to me because all the homes are in one area. I guess making areas with pwps vs having them all over. I wish my town was bigger I need room for an orchard that's out of the way. I'll find someplace to squeeze it someday.

i was having the same problem, so i've been trying lots of different landscaping techniques and here's what's helped make my town seem more expansive:

use public works projects of the same set, like Zen or Fairytale, and create a little park-like area in a square or rectangle of flowers. this will take some time & bells, and you might want to rearrange them after they're already built, so it can be a little frustrating. dedicating little corners of your town to one theme can help add dimensions to your town, and make it more exciting to walk through.

stock up on cedar trees and bushes!! use them to create pathways (they can be wide or narrow, but personally i think narrow pathways make the town seem bigger.) minimizing open spaces by creating distinct, narrow paths out of flowers/trees/bushes will definitely help add depth to your town.

try to fill every square inch of your town with things that you like, and make sure there is variety. this means build a wide variety of public works projects, breed special flowers (lots of flowers is a must!), and create patterns along pathways using flowers/trees/bushes.

i would also suggest walking around and thinking about how everything connects, like a real city planner. which paths can you take from your house to the re-tail shop? which paths lead to the town hall? can any of your villagers houses be connected, like on a street? define those paths with patterned flowers, and go from there. create little niches and pathways around your bridges and villagers houses. i wish you luck!

My town is divided into sections. Using hacks I've placed some of my villager houses in specific parts of the town, so they have become like little mini-villages, where you can just kinda wander through. It's neat.
