We messed up. Remember when you first turned on the game and talked to Rover, then got of the train and immediately got called Mayor of [YOURTOWN]? Then our charcter was acting all suprised. I've realized we just took some person's job. The person who was supposed to be mayor didn't become mayor. So we put the REAL mayor out of a job. Either that our Chacter is CRAZY and really is mayor but he forgot. OR. That we made some guy lose his job.

The game explains the odd situation by sending a letter to you after you're forced into the mayor role, the letter is from the person (or animal as is probably the case 
) saying basically they changed their minds about the job and hope you're cool with the situation. Whole situation is shady and probably a plot by Tom Nook, possibly with Isabelle in on it.

Ehh, as mayor you can't do much. I.e. can't kick people out for ruining your path, can't determine where people set their houses, so in actuality I think you saved them from a disappointing job.

I remember a comic where it was supposed to be Tortimer's grandson. I like to think it was jRover's job, and he just asked for the map to make sure you were going to the same place, but he thought the player was better suited for the job.

Haha I agree. I think Tom Nook is definitely in on it...he's like the top player in a big ponzi scheme!!!
Not only did we take that guy's jerb, but we took all of the town's poor villagers and either held them hostage or traded/sold them like objects. As far as the game is concerned, we're pretty much sociopaths.

I always thought the letter was from Tortimer, but Isabelle said he retired so it might not have been. As long as the original mayor is cool with it, I guess I am too! (●⌒∇⌒●)
I know right 0.0, he has a hand in all the main street businesses I'm sure.
I found it funny when smug villagers say they voted for you before a PWP request, because when you start the game, smugs are never part of the original 5, so they're little liars, aren't they?
My theory, it was an animal visitor not normally living there, but Nook and possibly Tortimer cooked up the idea to use a secret ballot telling the villagers who all assumed this was true, that whomever appeared on the train was the next mayor, tricking anyone who randomly appeared in town into becoming mayor since Isabelle turned down the position since she loves being a secretary.

I don't feel like we took anyone's job. Apparently no one else wanted it, so we were forced into it. In fact, we must have been grabbed from behind and thrown onto the train. Why else would we move with absolutely nothing? No money, no clothes, no home to move into.
