I like this tumblr posts/comics theory how it was supposed to be Tortimers grandson that was going to be the mayor but he was too scared and was afraid he would mess it up, but after hearing so any great things about you from Tortimer, he decided to let you be the mayor because he thought it was a better fit. I doubt that the mayor was crazy and the guy who we play was actually supposed to be the mayor. As for who it could be, it has to be someone who didn't want to let someone else down...maybe the son/daughter of one of the NPCs?

Not only did we take that guy's jerb, but we took all of the town's poor villagers and either held them hostage or traded/sold them like objects. As far as the game is concerned, we're pretty much sociopaths.
