redd showed up on my island today and offered me a serene painting. i definitely thought it was gonna be fake but it turned out to be genuine!!

I’m pretty sure having the first art you obtain being fake would cause some issues.

Correct, the second time you meet him he will be at the Plaza and invite you. On his ship it is possible for all the art to be fake or for multiple ones to be real.

My first painting was real. The first painting I bought after the museum expanded was also real.

Like a lot of people have already mentioned, the first painting is always real. I'm curious what paintings everyone got, though. I got the twinkling painting! Since the one I got is always authentic, I didn't even have to worry about it being a fake.
