Hi all, I've been doing a lot of coming and going with other players on the forum, I love seeing new towns and having visitors in mine! However in my forum lurking I've come to find that some of the things I do (and encourage visitors to do) are considered bad etiquette! I was wondering WHY? I won't be doing these things without asking but I'm curious.

Here's some things from the etiquette sticky that I had questions about:

- Don't talk to villagers.
- Don't buy from others re-tail.
- Don't Shake trees.
- Don't post messages on the message board. (I LOVE when people do this in my town so this one really surprised me!)

Thanks :)

Hey. I don't know about the first one, but ..

"Don't buy from others re-tail"
There may be things in there that they would want to buy later, or they put up to have someone else buy, or something like that.

"Don't Shake trees."
Trees drop bells and furniture, they might want to get those items themselves. Even if you don't take them, you still could be littering their town and I believe it could drop their town rating.

"Don't post messages on the message board."
I think this could delete old messages? Not sure.

Yeah I'm confused about those rules too. I mean, talking to villagers have no influence on them moving anyways, right? I've never had anyone post on my bulletin board... I wish someone did!
But I understand the Re-Tail and shopping rules. It's just polite to ask first if you're unsure rather than just wreck havoc shaking all the trees and bugging..villagers I guess? lol

If you talk to the villagers in someone else's town, they'll keep bringing it up in conversation for just about ever. Months. A lot of people find it really annoying for their villagers to be constantly telling them about so-and-so, who is a fantastic pro listener, and you should be the best of friends with them! Especially if it was just someone you did a trade with once and you can't remember who the person was.

Also, villagers occasionally put rare items like Sloppy Furniture in Retail. If the host hasn't checked their Retail yet that day, they would miss out on buying that item if a visitor buys it. And for anyone working on their catalog, this goes for anything non-rare in there as well.

Makes sense. I didn't even think about the tree shaking/littering thing!

I'm also asking about these in case I'm doing something bad to my own town by letting visitors do these things... haha.

Thanks! Super helpful answer :)

also it just helps to move trades along faster. if pple run around into stores, shake trees or talk to villagers you're just stuck waiting. another reason is some pple run around and ruin hybrids/flowers/dirt paths, so it's an easy way of minimizing the risks of having random pple in your town when you can control what they're doing. my friends have had pple go to their towns who ran around destroying hybrids/flowers bc they'er not used to the paths or stole things.

If doing a trade or going to another town, I always say hi and usually add my board name. It gets confusing not knowing who the actual host is. Talking can stop others from entering. I just stay put. Talking to villagers can be annoying as they discuss it constantly. Set your rules out. If you are comfortable letting people do things in your town then go ahead. But be careful!!

Yes! Gosh, the talking to villagers thing...that is SO annoying when they constantly bring it up every single conversation! D:

But the thing is, they bring up dream visitors, so unless you do without the dream suite, you're going to get that anyway.

Yes this is what I am questioning too. Unless they don't even allow visitors in dream. Or else there is no way to stop it lols that's why I don't bother about if they mentioned other players cause that make me feel I have lots of visitors^^

the message board is the only one i don't understand- any distasteful or unwanted messages can be deleted!

my only thought is maybe some share 3DS/towns with younger siblings or even children and are hesitant to let people potentially post something rude or suggestive and not get to it before its seen by them..? no idea though.

One thing I quickly learned is that if the person doesn't have rules posted where you can read them, then ask before doing ANYTHING. I myself am extremely lax with my rules for my town, compared to other people. The only things I would prefer them not to do is run, dig holes and leave them, or chop down trees. However if someone came over and ruined my town by doing those things it's easily fixable in my opinion so I wouldn't have a heart attack over it.
