It would be great to check on how our relationships are with our villagers are.
And if you reach a certain relationship status with a villager. They will tell you what you can do with them.
Say for example. You reached a villager relationship level to best friend, with someone. You can use your Nook Phone to call them. And ask them if they want to help out with gathering materials, mining, and other helpfulness.
To increase a relationship status with your villager. You talk with them, help them with what they need by seeing a question mark above their heads. Give what they need and that will increase the relationship status. The relationship status progression could act as a points bar thing or something else.
To know what relationship level you are with a villager. You open your Nook Phone. Then visit the community list. It would tell you how many hearts per villager you've got with them. So when you've first started on your island. The villager relationship status level, will be just "Acquaintance" which is the first heart. The second heart will unlock "Friends" status. The last third heart will be "Best Friend".
Also when you reach "Friend" status with a villager, on your island. They will send you a certain amount of goods, that they've found on the island, that they don't want. Or whatever they've crafted or bought themselves. And when you've reached "Best Friend" with someone. You can even get them to come with you, on a Nook Ticket flight, to visit a random island. So that they can help you gather lots of resources.
I suppose you're wondering where to find the resources, that your villager "Friend" and "Best Friend" had gathered? Well to find them, just go into the Dodo building. There's a crate inside in the corner. Interact with it and you can takeout the stuff that the villager has gathered for you. And when you're on your island. The things that they've collected for you will also be found in the crate.
Another thing I've noticed is. When I was like chatting with one of the villagers on my island a few days ago. I was gifted a hat. The next day when I chatted to the same villager. The villager was so happy to see that I was wearing the hat that he/she gave the other day to me. Which could act as a relationship progression, to the next relationship status.
