Villagers copying other villagers sayings?

At one point in time, most of my villagers were hagakure'n it and spouting "'Right" all the time.

I slightly changed Bella's catchphrase to "squeek" and now my sheep and pig villager are squeaking like mice. LOL

A snooty koala keeps calling my mayor villager a sweetie which is one thing, but Harry the hippo copys it and it seems just a little different coming out of his big mustached mouth.

Midge recently stole Bluebear's catchphrase... "omg candy!" sounds kinda weird coming out of a normal villager's mouth XD

Yeah, they do this all the time. Yesterday I caught Fauna and Octavian having a conversation and guess what? Fauna has adopted Octavian's catchphrase. It's really funny and also kinda weird to see Fauna going around like: "Hello, Anton! How may I help you, sucker?"

Yeah, for a while a lot of my villagers had taken Kitt's "child" catchphrase. It was very patronizing :I It always annoys me when they take up catchphrases that are specific to a certain type of animal, like why are you saying "saltlick" Purrl?? Cats don't lick salt!

Has anyone else noticed that usually it's villagers you don't have a high friendship with/don't talk to a lot who tend to change their catchphrases without you knowing? Or is that just a coincidence? I feel like with the villagers I talk to more, they are more likely to ping me and ask to change rather than just taking another villager's.

Truffles has major influence in my town. Half of my villagers are saying "snoutie" because of her. Sounds so funny coming from Ankha

More than half of the villagers in my town are saying "yeah buddy" and its all Eugene's fault.

It's a very common things, sadly and for some reason it always seems to be my lazy villagers who pick up sayings from others....I had 4 villagers in the last 2 weeks start saying 'sulky', thanks, Marshal....
I remember months ago when I first had Erik in my town, everybody seemed to have taken his chow down phrase....it really spread....

Reviving old thread, Ankha says "Kachow" 1 day within giving it to Kid Cat. Yup, this happens all the time. Most often in New leaf i'd say. Villagers will copy clothes, catchphrases anything they can get their hands on. I used to find this terribly annoying when I became obsessed with the originality of my villagers, but eh I guess imitation is the best form of flattery. Some stolen catchphrases suit other villagers more than the villager who had it before anyway. I think at one point I had almost everyone in town saying "otaku" which is Genji's catchphrase. Didn't like the idea of all my villagers saying that too much, tbh. Since it makes no sense as it is so i'd rather just Genji had the catchphrase. It used to drive me nuts though, that i'd spend hours doing the ping cheat to get them to change it.

I think it's cute. Kinda like irl you tend to use similar speech as your friends c: I like my villagers befriending each other! Besides, catchphrase is pretty easy to change anyways.

Everyone was saying either Snacky or Sugar Cube thanks to Gayle and Clyde. Now half of my town says "uh-huh" lmao. Gayle loves to give her shirt to people. I decided to put custom made gingham shirts at the able sisters for them to wear instead of sharing and im trying to give them neutral catchphrases so I dont have to worry about sharing.

In my last save, my villagers all started saying 'yip, yip', Bones' catchphase. And it was weird seeing a gorilla saying it too.

At one point I had all my villagers saying 'honey, Maple's original phrase but I'm constantly getting asked for phrases so I try to give each villager a different one.
