So I have been away from New Leaf for a while but I'm warming back up to my towns with approaching Xmas break. I do plan on getting some of these new villagers into my towns, but like is there a guide anywhere that I'm missing that details all the little facets of moving in and moving out villagers?

Like they apparently don't go on pathways? is that true?
16 cycle exist for them?
Do I need to move out a villager before I scan an amiibo?

I have so many questions about it and don't know where to go for a reliable resource....

you don't need to move out a villager before scanning an amiibo card, you'll have an option to "kick out" someone that's currently in the town.

To answer your questions...

1. Yes they no longer move on paths/patterns! :) Just be sure to leave a 3x3 spot open for your villagers.
2. Cards/Figures completely override the 16-villager cycle so if a villager moves away, if you have their card they will move right back in.
3. For series 1~4(dunno about the new 50 and the Zelda/Splatoon/Sanrio ones sorry), Wisp gives you the option to kick out one of your existing villagers if you're full(10) so you can bring in the new villager. The one you kick out immediately gets put into boxes, and they move out the next day while the villager you brought in via card/figure places their plot down at the same time.

Hope this cleared up any confusion! :)

lord! this makes things so much easier if you have the cards...... I feel like I will buy some packs in the future!

do normal villager move ins from other towns obey the pattern rule?

thanks to both for answering so quickly! if I have more questions I will post here, I just loaded my one town for the first time

Yes, normal random move-ins(even those from another town's void) do obey the pattern rule! I've tested this myself when the update first came out. c:
