I decided to start a thread, so we could share our villager theories. They can be ones that you thought up yourself or ones that you just found on the internet or whatever. Please, feel free to post your villager theories or tell us whether or not you agree or disagree with a theory and why. Just please make sure to be polite about.

1) Pietro: You guys probably know about this already, but I theorize that Pietro was actually made to be an off-color joke character and was based off of John Wayne Gacey. Also, FYI, I'm not actually afraid of clowns IRL. It's just that the specific combination of a Smug, clown villager just feels really off to me, especially in a game like ACNL and because Nintendo actually has a history of putting creepy or off references in their games.

2) Graham: I actually really hate this one because it's really just a lot of hurtful stereotyping on Nintendo's part, but bear with me here. As you guys know, Graham is meant to be a playful, nerdy Smug villager. But if you go in his house then things kinda start to get weird. That's because Graham is not actually meant to come off as playful. He is supposed to be creepy and gross, at least to Japanese players. See, Graham represents all of the hurtful stereotypes that the Japanese associate with otaku, who are actually looked down upon in Japanese culture. They are stereotyped as forward, overweight men that are dirty, video game addicts and are obsessed with a certain character or pop idol. A lot of people even think that otaku are stalkers, looking for girls that resemble their favorite manga character. As if that weren't bad enough, there was actually a serial killer back in the 1980s known as the Otaku Killer, who is still widely celebrated in Japan today. Here is how Google defines the word otaku-
o?ta?ku
ōˈt?ko͞o/
noun
plural noun: otaku
(in Japan) a young person who is obsessed with computers or particular aspects of popular culture to the detriment of their social skills.
Origin

Japanese, literally ?your house,? alluding to the reluctance of such young people to leave the house.

3) Beardo: It is my personal belief and theory that Beardo was based off the character John H. Watson from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes series. There are several reasons for this. First of all, Watson was a writer and in the books, every story was told from his perspective. Beardo just so happens to have a typewriter and an editors' desk in his house. Second, past incarnations of Watson usually depicted him as a portly, English man with either sideburns and a mustache or a full-on beard, and well, we've all seen Beardo. Third, the character of Watson was also depicted as a -- for lack of a better word -- player, who dated lots of women before he finally settled down with his wife Mary Morstan, and Beardo is a Smug.

4) Stitches: A teddy bear that was Frankensteined together, for the most part. But I also believe that the bear is actually being possessed by the ghost of a small child. Perhaps the bear was the child's favorite toy growing up. Maybe the child isn't even aware that's he's passed on, and is living through a teddy.

A theory about coco:

Coco is a gyroid or looks like one. In the Japanese versions of the AC games, Gyroids are called Haniwa, which have a special meaning in themselves: Haniwa (埴輪) are terracotta clay figures which were made for ritual use and buried with the dead as funerary objects during the Kofun period (3rd to 6th century AD) of the history of Japan. Basically, Gyroids are gifts that are buried with people who have died. The reason that Gyroids appear after a rainy day is because when it rains, the soil becomes loose, wet, and may erode. Thus revealing past graves and other things (fossils) in the ground that have been buried.

So this could mean Coco is haunted by a dead human, possible a girl. The figures in her house could show her family...? anyway so coco is possessed by a spirit when a gyroid was buried with the humans body and then created coco (if this makes sense.)

I always coco was a coconut! Haha I don't have any theories cos im boring. But if I have any!

Walt: Walt is a retired spy. His initial shirt is a Japanese house robe, and combined with his cranky personality and old-fashioned / well-planned home suggest he is an older person looking for a place to settle down. But he's no ordinary person - his arms are covered in bandages, and he has a large scar across his face - wounds from his past career. But to top it off: his favorite song is K. K. Agent! He was a secret agent. His catchphrase, "Take the good with the bad," might imply he needs someone to accept both the good and bad things about him. He's a retired spy looking for a quiet place to start a new life!

Beardo is a detective/spy, his house gives of that impression and he wears the detective shirt, no questions asked.

Story about Wendy!

Wendy was a happy white sheep in whole herd of sheeps! She was peppy as she still is now and the other sheep wanted to relax but Wendy always came up with ridiculous ideas and the sheep were had enough of her! So they started making a plan to get Wendy away from the herd, they could not just drop her somewhere else because people would recognise her and she would be back her in no time! They had to disguise her! So when it was night and Wendy was sleeping, the other sheeps sneaked up to her and threw a bucket of light blue paint over her wool and gave her a melon themed scarf. When Wendy awakened she found out that she no longer was where she used to be, she started looking for her herd but without succes.

Wendy is ever since then looking for a new home and it might be that your town will be Wendy's next home! Please take care of her, her (made up) back story is simply too sad for words, she deserves a good new home and some real friends!

I saw him as a retired samurai, honestly. Doesn't help that his scar and wardrobe remind me of Rurouni Kenshin.

I've developed an insane theory about Tom Nook being in a raccoon suit. Please do not take this seriously lol.

The Nooklings

On the Animal Crossing Wikia it says, "Dr. Shrunk about one emotion, he talks about how we all wear masks, and then says that Tom Nook 'wears a raccoon suit, but it serves the same general purpose'." Now, how can a man dressed in a raccoon suit have these "nephew" Nooklings that play along with his act. I'll tell you why. The Nooklings are Gyroids dressed in suits. If you listen to the Gyroids, they have the identical voice of the Nooklings. Furthermore, their size is a perfect match. Coincidence? I think not!

Digby

Isabelle and Digby are twins, yet, their eyes are so different. Isabelle's are filled with hope, joy, and happiness while Digby's are devoid of all meaning. He is Tom Nook's puppet. Why does he stand by that gate 24/7? Do you think Digby likes his job? Tom Nook has brainwashed Digby to stand guard by that gate to monitor you and your villager's activity. In addition, he is holding the Streetpass residents hostage. They are never allowed to leave their areas and are forced to make do with what they have.

The conclusion... Tom Nook is a monster.
