Villager birthday gifts

Do villagers only love or hate birthday gifts? I know that you should get them a gift in their preferred style (and color) but not in a style they dislike. What happens if you give them a gift that is somewhere in between? How does that affect friendship? For example, if you have a villager who likes traditional blue items and give them something that is traditional but not blue, or blue but in a style they don't hate but isn't traditional, what happens?

I have a villager's birthday coming up and I haven't been able to find something according to both criteria that they'd like.

Isn't that only if they hate the gift? Or if it's not in their preferred style? I've gotten that response from a villager before but I can't remember what I gave them.

Not sure if the villager hated it, but I know the gift matched either the style or the color (though not both).

I have a villager's birthday coming up and I haven't been able to find something according to both criteria that they'd like.

I've gotten positive responses from sending gifts that match color or style but not both. I have gotten a return gift after matching just one or the other. I have failed to get a gift in the mail after giving something random, but I never checked to see if it was actually a style they didn't like or whether it was a neutral style. And Liquefy seems to indicate that you have to actually give trash to decrease friendship.

If you wrap the gift, they like it better I think. Give them a rare item (I give them my spare trophies or a gracie grace item) and they will probably love it.

I honestly just wing it haha. They get what they get. If they don't like it they can throw it in the river like they always do.


(I mean how ELSE would the trash in the river get there? I don't put it there??????)

Thanks for the replies. I usually try to match at least one of the characteristics since I don't want them to hate what I give them.

With so many variants, I feel like I should use the next villager birthday to experiment with gifts on my different characters, and see what happens.

I've noticed the wrapped gifts thing too... their dialogue seems happier, at least. I had two of my characters give that villager a gift and one of them wrapped the gift. The other didn't because I forgot. Both items were from their preferred gifts list but the wrapped one got a better reaction.
