I keep hearing about this amiibo update but I honestly have no idea how it's gonna change the game. Also, can you even update if you have a cartridge or do you have to have a digital copy in order for it to work??

There is a built in 'update data' option on the cartridges, and based on everything I've heard I would assume that you could indeed get the update that way.
From the sounds of things, the Amiibo update will add more furniture, at least 2 new villagers based on Splatoon, and the ability to use AC Amiibo cards to get the featured villager to move into your town.
At least, that's my understanding.

ooooohhh new furniture :0 I hope that's true!! I don't have any amiibo cards but I'm definitely excited about new furniture items!

We're supposed to get HHD furniture, mobile homes (seen above) and bunch of new/returning villagers. There's a whole thread you could check for details. ~

Amazon UK already has preorders for the rerelease of NL along with the new amiibos.
