I wished my school would do the same, but there is the risk that it could get damaged/broken and stolen by someone.
I've seen a boy with his 3DS XL out once, although I'm pretty sure the teachers and the principal would just confiscate the console(s). We have to bring our devices (laptop, iPad, tablets) to school already and my iPad got dropped...got a red and fuzzy screen but after hitting it on the back a couple of times it's now back to normal.
