Trouble downloading custom designs?

I am using the Nintendo app to scan a QR code for a custom design, but it isn't showing up at all on my Nook Phone. Can someone give me a clear step-by-step other than scanning the code on the app? Am I missing something? There don't seem to be any instructions about how to make it appear, as if it's just supposed to automatically load onto my Nook Phone but I don't see it... I'm also definitely connected to the internet. Sorry if it's obvious I'm very new and trying my best

I assumed you just go to Able's and type in the ID in the machine in order to get custom designs.
 
I'm sorry, I have semi figured out the problem and now have a new question. I restarted my island last week, and the app is still connected to my old character, on the same Nintendo account, but it doesn't show my new character as an option to switch to. How do I fix that?

I unfortunately don't have Able's yet :( And it's just a QR code from another NH user online
 
I did, I also logged out and back in. Is there something I need to do within the game?
I’m not sure unfortunately :( I use the Nintendo app but have never restarted my game, so I don’t know how to unlink and relink it to a new island phone... I don’t recall there ever being anything you had to do in the game to make this work.

If you go into Settings in the app and click “change player” do you have other options?

No, it just has my old player selected with no other options. I feel I may be out of luck on this one :( There must have been some sort of communication issue between the app and my switch.
 
Have you tried resetting your Nook Link settings from the New Horizons title screen?I'm not 100% sure but you might have to do this to get your new player connected.
