We can hop across narrow streams but villagers can't. Does anyone have a villager house secluded on their own little "island" and does it affect the game at all (ex. you don't see them at the plaza as often because they get stuck)?

I think that villagers can start from their house and move to the plaza, but they can also just spawn in the plaza, so secluding them can maybe limit how often they show up, but it won't stop them entirely.

they have hidden powers so can't be stopped. back when I first started Paula had me do the treasure hunt game. finally found it on the second level back before I had any ramps leading up there

I don’t think rivers stop them from being able to spawn somewhere on the island, however I think cliffs might.
I left one house up on a cliff, just it’s own little square until I could move it. The villager (poor Stu) never strayed from his tiny cuff square. He was either in his home or right outside on the cliff.

I also visited that one island through DA that is a huge maze and all villagers are in the back on their own little cliffs and I believe they stay there at their homes all the time and can’t spawn elsewhere.

I have a few of my villagers on cliffs and they still walk around everywhere.
Interesting! I don’t recall my villager being able to do that. I wonder if there’s a difference with villagers being able to walk around if their house is on a tiny cliff or a large cliff

A few months back, I watched a video where someone flooded their entire island and that some buildings are only accessible using the rescue services. Despite most buildings being surrounded by water, villagers can still teleport to those nearby areas. Here's the video I'm talking about:

I used to have Poppy and Freya’s house at the back of my island and the path there was pretty narrow (maybe just one space? The path’s in between a statue and a cliff) but they keep on appearing by the plaza frequently and some other places too at times.
