So, everytime I start a town in New Leaf I get sucked in and want to play a lot. But then of course grass wears down. If grass wears down too much, snowballs will not appear in winter thus temporarily breaking the game's mechanics until the grass grows back.

As a result, I ALWAYS end up abandoning my town and going for too long without playing that I'd need to start a new town. In case a main series Animal Crossing game WITHOUT grass deterioration comes to the Switch, I'd like to play some New Leaf until then, but I need help.

Aside from needing to make an online request in the Train Station board (which I will do IF I decide to start a new town), I need as many tips and tricks as possible to properly manage my time in game so that I can play, stop so the grass can re-grow, play, stop, rinse and repeat as needed.

Anyone know how to greatly reduce the chances of long term grass deterioration without going for too long a period of time without playing?

First thing I did in my town was put down paths- this way only the pathways get deteriorated and I had room for flowers, snowmen, trees, etc ^_^

The paths themselves don't deteriorate but the grass under them is what Keldi was talking about. The paths are really used as a great buffer for grass wear because if you stick to only using your paths then you'll keep your grass lush longer in other places. It took me a while to get used to only walking on placed paths because I was so used to running around all across the map all willy nilly like, however if you stick to walking on your paths the grass that's on the rest of the map will thank you.

oh and there's always tt'ing to fix the grass deterioration but if you're not a fan of doing that then the best bet would be to use paths! Or you could always wear down your grass to a great natural look and then have beautiful lush grass everywhere else!

Try searching acnl grass wear, I remember doing this when I first started playing. And I didn't even know that grass deteriorated so found that out the hard way but the best tip is to WALK and never ever go too fast. You'll eventually get natural dirt paths from places you frequent the most and just go slow over the rest.

@Tiffanistar I'm not a fan of time traveling due to the number of games I play that are synced to the 3DS clock like Pokemon and, on a rare occasion, Tomodachi Life.

@Darby That's the same advice I'd give to someone actually. I always walk in my town no matter what. If I were to invite people over, I'd also have a strict Please Walk Only rule. I've known about the deterioration since prior to the game's release...I just don't like it because I'm addicted to main series Animal Crossing and could spend hours on end playing, so I find it to be a counterproductive feature and one that needs to go, or not appear in future installments.

Time traveling doesn't affect your 3ds clock. Only the clock in Animal Crossing.

I think that your best bet is to not run around you're map all crazy, and instead walk + use paths. Then you can play as long as you want without having to worry about grass deterioration.

That's a bit odd. One time when I set my clock back an hour to go into the general store (I think it was TIY Emporium at the time...I forget) I loaded the game, entered the store, did what I'd come to do and saved and quit. Then I set the clock to the correct time. I took the game card out and put Tomodachi Life in and when I loaded that up it mentioned that my system's clock had been altered and that it recommended not doing that. So I figured changing the system's clock to time travel would affect all games that are synced to the clock.

What are some good map layouts to make a static traveling pathway for the majority use of walking around? Obviously I will ocassionally need to go around the fresh water to catch fish and check all the trees to catch insects, but aside from that, I'm new to static pathways, whether I allow for natural dirt paths or actually place homemade path tiles down.

So all advice there would be helpful too.

When you want to TT, change the clock with Isabelle, not your DS clock. That's what Madaiu meant.

Ohhhhh!!!! I never even stopped to think of that. I'll have to try that out sometimes, but I do want to know what sorts of negative effects can happen.

The grass wear almost drove me to the point of deleting my town, then I started making natural dirt paths, and TT'd a little to make the outer grass grow back.

It looks good now.

I wish there was a tool to create natural paths, so you could walk EVERYWHERE without having to worry about grass deterioration.

I'll suggest the same as others: lay down paths and only walk on them. You'll soon have lots of grass everywhere else. :)
You can also make your town very pretty by choosing nice paths, and make combinations of them... I'd enjoy the game a lot less if there were no path laying option myself. :)

You can also plant flowers in areas where the grass has deteriorated and water them every day to reduce damage and make the grass grow back faster ( ? ▽ ` )ノ

Weeds, flowers wilting, villagers moving away, these are some effects if you jump forward too much. If you tt 1 or 2 days at a time, you can prevent all of these. I use tt to go to 5:54 am and water all my flowers, so that when 6am strikes i can get hybrids rather quick-er.
ALSO DO NOT TT WITH TURNIPS!!! Turnips are extremly sensitive to timeskips, and will rot if you tt with them.
