Right now I have 3 normals and they're sweet but kind of boring. I wouldn't mind more smugs, lazies, or snooties. Only personality that I would mind having a lot of is jocks.

I honestly spend more time watching my villagers exist than talking to them on some days, and I can confirm how far the "differing hobbies, same personality" thing can come into play for enjoyment of the overall island cast. Snake and Rory are both Jocks, but I've literally never seen the latter exercise -- all he does is eat candy and sing. And since everyone congregates in town centre, the variation of activities can make for some pretty amusing photos/recordings.
In NL, I had 3 normals, but I probably couldn't handle 3 again in NH of any personality type. 2 is pushing it slightly depending on how similar the villagers are. The different hobbies definitely break it up for me and it's nice to see how different personalities interact with their environment.
I have Beau and Sherb also and they are exactly the same in terms of subtype and hobby, but they have completely different vibes imo so it's more manageable. I probably couldn't handle another lazy and Beau is probably the villager I'd let go if I think of someone else I'd rather have.

I can't have two of the same personality on my island... I think it gets way to repetitive otherwise. Most of my villagers already share hobbies so I'd still like more variety in that front, but yeah I can't imagine having so many of the same personality on my island. I think the only personality I'd make an exception for would be cranky.

I have 3 lazies right now, but luckily filbert is leaving tomorrow.
Its def too much for me. I'm good with one lazy telling me about the bugs in their house.
I also have 3 normal and I'd like to cut that down to one or maybe two also, but they don't bother me as much.

3 lazy: Zucker, bob and stitches, kinda sad bob has a starter house 
but it’s alright cuz he has fruits so I’ll go with that theme. I was contemplating which one to kick out cuz I wanted a jock and snooty, but figured that I couldn’t really connect with reneigh and I pretty much have all the reactions from uchi (I believe) so I kicked her out instead.

I have 3 crankies and 3 smugs, I personally love the cranky personality so even if it is a bit repetitive, I've gotten used to it. The smug personality really got on my nerves but I've come around to the personality and so far it's been great!
I'd say make sure it's the villagers you like though or else it might make the repetitiveness hard to take until you're used to it

I currently have 4 lazies (dizzy, Sherb, moe, and Beau) and it’s not horrible, but I don’t plan on keeping all 4 of them. The dialogue can get repetitive, but it’s less about me not liking them and more about me wanting to have at least 1 of every personality type. Since I also have 2 smugs I plan on keeping, I can’t have 4 lazies. However, I think it’s really up to you! I think if they’re all villagers you like it could work! Also, if you put in a little imagination, I think the villagers can become subtlety different to you! And the addition of hobbies helps with this

Yes. I had three jocks (my starter Hamlet, Cousteau who I got from a mystery tour, and Axel, who was voided) and it was A LOT. Jocks are also louder personalities, so that played into it. I also have two peppy bunnies and that seems like too much sometimes without any other peppies on my island.

I have a lot of dual personality types on my dreamy list (two snooties, two crankies, two normals...)
I'm scared of finding them repetitive so I have forced myself to change some things up in my list (for example, I had two smugs on my list, Raymond and Marshal, so I moved Marshal out for Audie.)
However, I do have 3 lazies on my dreamy list and currently have 5 lazies on my island (Lucky, Drago, and Derwin are the dreamies, but I also have Cranston and Beau for a temporary amount of time).
I honestly don't mind, but I do forget about Cranston a lot, and Beau I cycle with Wolfgang via amiibo so I can earn NMT to go Villager hunting. Mostly I just talk to my 3 babies, but it really isn't annoying to me.
Is it repetitive? Sometimes. Especially when giving them their daily fruit (I don't want to mess up their houses so I gift them fruit), they say the exact same line:
"A (fruit)! Yummy! It looks so good! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Oh, Bambie! I'm gonna lay on the floor and eat that. Might even share with the bugs!"
Don't get me wrong, it's a very cute line. It just gets a bit annoying considering it's the only thing they all say when I gift them fruit.

It does get pretty repetitive I have 4 lazy villagers (Sherb, Beau, Zucker and Stitches) and 3 Normal villagers (Fauna, Merengue and Marina) then I have 2 Smug (Marshal and Raymond) and 1 Snooty (Judy) LOL. But I don't mind, they're all the villagers that I wanted so I'm really satisfied ^^
At one point, I had 4 jocks and the same dialogue over and over again made me lose interest in talking to them cause I could already predict what they were gonna say. Now I'm down to 2 jocks and I definitely enjoy the variety of dialogue I get from my other villagers haha.
I probably wouldn't invite a new jock to my village if given the chance (even tho I love my jock villagers Genji and Snake), but I haven't had multiples of any other personality other than smug so I'd probably invite them if they were cute HAHA

In “New Leaf,” it was necessary, for some time, to have all villager personality categories covered so one’s mayor had a broader selection, and the opportunity, to build Public Works Projects.
I eventually got past that with my first town, Applewin, and made do without a Cranky or a Snooty. I did not have three from a given villager personality category. But, I had two from this and two from a given villager personality category.
So far in “New Horizons,’ balancing villager personality categories is not as necessary.
I currently have all villager personality categories because I am used to doing that. And I have an equal number of male and female islanders. They are: Cranky octopus Octavian; Snooty werewolf Whitney; Lazy deer Erik and bear cub Stitches; Normal duck Molly; starting Jock bear Teddy; Peppy rabbit Bonbon; Smug squirrel Marshal; and starting Uchi cat Katt and chicken Plucky.
I’m good.
