Thoughts on the morality of amiibo villagers in sale?

I mean it is just a game. I have Dobie's amiibo, and if I can, I'll help as many people get him as possible. If it's someone's dream villager, why wouldn't I help? I would want someone to do the same for me. I'm not going to keep cycling Dobie back to back, but if someone wants him I'll try my best.

Just an example

To defend OP a bit, I do think scanning in and selling villager after villager for exorbitant prices is scummy. Doing it for free or reasonable prices is another matter entirely, but abusing the demand and making a huge profit that way seems a little icky to me. If that’s what OP was taking about, I can at least see where they’re coming from.

I do agree on this. Similarly to what I said before, it's just a game. People are so obsessed with making bells sometimes that I feel like they forget.

giveaways are fine. charging a small fee (1 nmt for example) is fine. charging 90 NMT is ridiculous.

I think that the notion of trading villagers for IGB/NMT/or any other currency is totally against the purpose of Animal Crossing anyways.

But notwithstanding that, where do you then draw the morality line? Someone who TT's, are theri 'authentic' villager trades less moral?

i don't mind that much
but i kinda dislike having to pay to get a villager like that
i live in a third world country where amiibos aren't even sold and even if i wanted to buy them from abroad it would be way too expensive because my currency is really devaluated in comparison to the american dollar so it is out of the question for me to get amiibos

I think that amiibos are a great way for people to get access to villagers that are less common and/or really popular. I know right now there's a lot of inflation going on and the prices for villagers right now is crazy, but just like with new leaf once the game settles and the "new game hype" dies down and TBT are back up and things start to normalize I have full confidence prices will drop. I think the prices are the main issue with villager trading right now, in my opinion how you got that villager whether by amiibo or "naturally" is irrelevant. Once the prices drop it's gonna be easier to get your dreamies cuz there will be more on the market. The only other thing to worry about is the whole amiibo pushout campsite glitch but that's more of a nintendo patch issue than a morality issue lol/

Honestly, I don't mind. I don't cycle, but if my 2 Amiibo villagers ever ask to move, I will give them away to people who really want them and re-summon them to my village.

I think it's immoral to risk glitching someone's game. Other than that, there is no economic immorality in using amiibo villagers. It increases supply, and price drops to match once people's needs are met. The economy balances out over time.

I've never sold a villager and never would.

I used my amiibo's to move them in, or in the case of series 5 cards, I'd let people come over to order items from the RV's.

I never made a cent.

This complaining about people using amiibo's is getting old.

I paid for my amiibo's and just because I scan them in, doesn't mean they aren't 'authentic'. o_O

I don't make any money from it, and three days of crafting for the villager as well as what I paid for the cards should give me the right to move them in.

I shouldn't even have to craft a thing!
I paid for the card!

People being put down for using their amiibo's they purchased with their own money, and back in New Leaf, allowing a multitude of people over to buy special items from RV's, free of charge.
I don't think anyone's complaining about the use of amiibos. Everyone here seems to agree with you.
The whole point of the thread was to talk about people's ideas on using them for transactions. If you want them in your own town, that's fine, but that's not the point of the thread.

I think amiibos are fine. I'm interested to know how you feel about people summoning an amiibo character daily only to get DIY recipes (not crafting them to give to the villager so that you can get more than three).

That's such a lovely way to go about it! It's nice to help people get their dreamies. I've been doing the same with my Marshal amiibo card, and it's so satisfying to see people so happy after the fact.

What's with threads lately asking about the ethics of officially advertised and built-in game mechanics xD

Basically just what everyone has already said: It's an official system Nintendo implemented. If we were talking about hacked villagers? Yeah that's a problem, but these are cards that can be obtained in legitimate ways that take the effort of either spending real world money or trading/recieving from others. Even more difficult to get legit ones now because the prices skyrocketed lately
Animal crossing purists be wildin' honestly

This was what I was trying to have the thread's discussion be about to begin with, but I think some people misunderstood, which is fine. I'm just happy to have a successful thread. I wish people were more generous, but late stage capitalism isnt going anywhere any time soon lmao.

Eventually, all 10 of my villagers will be a product of Amiibo cards. I have absolutely no issue with it whatsoever.

@ above Yeah, I was curious because I do do that with my one amiibo card. I'm not interested in having him come to my town even though he's my favorite, so he's free daily DIYs. Sometimes he asks for something I already know though, but I guess that is the trade off. I think this is more "cheaty" than using amiibos themselves, but I still really don't think either is actual cheating.

There's nothing cheaty about using them to get DIY's, that's actually really clever. I never thought of doing that before.

I remember saying ages ago before the game came out, that to get special items, we'd have to get it from a specific villager, and craft it for them. Just like PC.

Everybody thought I was nuts. :)
