Thoughts on popular villagers?

I think it's fine to not care about villager popularity AND also fine to care villager popularity, as long as the game stays 100% enjoyable to you.

Some people love to min/max the game and a part of that is getting high-tier villagers.
Some people like to get villagers who they just like or who are sentimental. Both ways of playing the game are ok! Just stay in your lane.

There is FOMO all around with ACNH not just villagers. It's because we're all stuck inside and our only social outlet is social media. Island designs can be "basic" as well (orchards, kiddie play areas, sauna room, beach bar, etc.) but as long as you're enjoying it who cares!

Don't do anything because you feel pressured to. Don't do anything that makes you not enjoy the game.

Edit: Also, that is SO RUDE that someone said that about your villagers. Just forget them and have a dance party with Julian

thank you! i think it’s a lesson well learned lol i witnessed a friend kick beau (who she really likes) off her island because people kept telling her she had no flavor on her island. probably gonna lend her my beau amiibo because ik she misses him T^T

i occasionally feel kinda basic for having/looking for popular villagers, but at the same time i don't care. i have a good amount of "unpopular" villagers to balance it out (i guess? there's no balancing in my book lol i love them), and everytime i talk to raymond (i've probably talked to him 20 times or more today, i still can't believe i snagged him), get yet another bug for sherb, step into julian's house... it's so great and it makes me smile. they're popular for a reason, don't get yourself down about it. if they make you happy, then that's that.

also i can't wait for the day i snag marshal, yet another popular villager. just because everyone seems to have them doesn't mean i can't smile ridiculously when i find them or someone trades them to me. when i got raymond it was from a really kind person on discord and i pretty much couldn't stop smiling. heck, i'm smiling about it right now lol

i totally understand that! i found raymond in literally the most bizarre place (someone on tiktok really wanted audie so i traded them for raymond) and to this day i’m still shocked that she was nice enough to give me both raymond and like 20 NMT cause she no longer had to look for audie. every time i talk to him on my island i’m reminded of good experiences so that’s why i’m attached now lol

Popular villagers became that way for a reason. They're typically the ones with the most aesthetically pleasing designs. Don't feel bad for liking something just because lots of other people like it too!

I can see why certain villagers are popular, like Judy she's pretty cute, and Merengue too. I wouldn't say anybody is basic for liking them they're genuinely well designed.

My dreamies aren't very popular though other than Ankha. But that's because I don't really go for cute or beautiful villagers. Raymond and Reneigh really don't interest me at all and I don't understand the hype around them. But that's just because my taste is different.

I remember everyone was absolutely obsessed over Julian at one point - now you say people think he's too basic? I wouldn't worry then about being into the "overrated" villagers, people get bored of them and move on.

...and hey, one persons dreamies are another persons nightmaries I can't stand any of the villagers with the solid black "sparkly" eyes (like those Judy has), it's just so...unnatural to me lol. Also not a big fan of any of the smugs (because smug personality in NH is kind of off) and they're basically all popular.

Be yourself. It's okay to like whoever you like. Your happiness should never have to depend on someone else's opinion. You make you happy.

I'm on the other end of the spectrum, I believe. The villagers I adore are the un-cute ones. The ones some say are ugly or low-tier or creepy. Like Beardo. But he makes me smile! Also Claude, the bunny with the unibrow. He's so funny and adorable, in my books anyway, and every day I look forward to talking to him. Just had Greta move in two days ago, and I love her already.

Also who dares saying Julian is basic? Out of all the horses he's the only unicorn... if that's not unique I don't know what is

Don't feel bad for liking Julian. Hes an amazing character! People like to voice their opinions on popular villagers (and trends in general) once it becomes big, that's just how it is. And having him won't make you bland, it will make you happy! If other people think that's boring or bland - that's their opinion. But I get you, it's not nice to hear people talking down on your taste. Wish they could just keep it shut. ♡

I like cute things so I imagine most of my wanted villagers are popular ones. It doesn't bother me though.

Recently got Julian and I quite like him despite not being one of my wanted. Judy wasn't exactly on my want list either but I'm happy she's here.

My favourites are Cats, wolves and deer types, I think the only one I want who isn't popular is Fuchsia and I was surprised she wasn't.

You spend more time than anyone else looking at and interacting with your villagers; so why not pick the ones you enjoy the look of the most? Even if they just so happen to be popular. It's not basic. And people who say it is are toxic

My sister loves Julian and Ankha too, but she also loves the Villagers she has now. (Its her first game). Im not even mad at the fact that people like popular villagers. Its just that some people tend to look down on someone, if you dont have all those Tier 1 and 2 Villagers and the perfect Island like everyone else and im like: "Am i a Robot who needs to follow instructions? I have a mind of my own."

Like: "Eww, you like those Villagers?"

Thats why it bothers me sometimes, when People have always the same Dreamie list which seems to be copypasted. Its something you would see in OU on Pokemon Showdown, where Raymond is basicly Landorus-Therian.

We have over 400 Villagers and i dont know if people really have the same Villagers as a Dreamie by pure coincidence or just inviting them to their Island, because of fear what other people would say.

Maybe im too old to understand what some Players think by choosing certain chatacters, because for me they always had a background story (either simple or more complicated), not just because they are popular or pretty. I know its weird, but thats my logic.

No offence what people should like or not. I mean i still like my Mitzi and Merengue.

I will unapologetically love them regardless of popularity. I like them and they're popular by chance and...I can't help that? People who deadass shame you for being a "sheep" or "trend rider" are worse than people who do love popular ones. No one goes out their way to call your favorites ugly and call them overrated just cause of the fanbase it built. LOL. (I also like unpopular ones like Snake and Jacques but ya.)

When Raymond was at 3k NMT in auctions people just barrage insulted him just because of ppl liking him and the lengths people wanna buy him. Stay pressed lol.

it's honestly not surprising, but sad to me that people think that if they like something that's not popular that makes them better, cooler, unique, or whatever title they want to use. personally, i love julian, marshall, stitches, wolfgang, audie, muffy etc and they're all currently in my town. i don't care whatsoever if people think i'm too mainstream because i like these villagers. i like what i like, and i don't let other people's opinions on my likes sway me at all.

at the end of the day, what they think doesn't matter. they're not playing my game, it's not their town. why should i let what they say dictate my likes? just do you, OP. you like what you like; be proud of who you like and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

If you like something... popular or unpopular... like it! Don't let other people's persuade you one way or another. If you let naysayers persuade you into disliking or getting rid of something you like, then you really are following the crowd.

what you said went right over my head. i didn't know people actually went out of their way to get cute villagers just to have the popular stuff. that's... uhm, okay. i thought Hipsters stopped being a thing in 2012. well, in that case, sorry about my post and i agree with you. those people who need to have the most popular, just because they're popular are sad imo.
