Thoughts On Facebook/Metaverse

I'm curious to know what everyone thinks of Facebook's switch to the Metaverse in the upcoming months.

I really hate Facebook. I’ve gone into everything wrong with it on other posts, so I’m not too concerned with what happens with it. It definitely isn’t improving and it’s only going to get worse. I’m not a fan of most social media and only use a select few to keep contact with friends. I’ve been a lot happier since I’ve stopped using it. It’s just mindless scrolling and bullying for the most part.

I think Facebook is a toxic sewage plant of disinformation and petty families. It's a hard pass for me. I would prefer to not have ANY Facebook-related products but I have WhatsApp installed because it's the preferred communication method for group assignments at my uni.

Facebook should spend less time working on their crappy metaverse and more time trying to make the real world a better place.

It's laughable. Facebook has proven to be a very toxic social media site and Mark Zuckerberg trying to paint over the cracks of his precious empire by rebranding it Meta just makes it all that more ridiculous in the long run.

I honestly don't get it? Is it just a virtual reality thing? It seems weird and pretentious and like.. ignorant as to what the average person wants out of a social media platform.

i honestly couldn’t care less, and my only opinion on facebook is that it sucks lol. my parents have been obsessed with facebook and the games on there for as long as i can remember which contributed to the neglect i experienced as a child : ), and i have listened to them complain about it for years while still continuing to use it, which is definitely more of a personal problem than a facebook problem, but i’m still not a fan. plus, with all of the complaints and breakdowns my parents have had about it over the years, it doesn’t really seem like a fun platform to use anyways.

Them changing their name is fine I guess. Doesn't really matter to me either way. Meta is a really dumb sounding name in my opinion though. I makes them sound like they are trying too hard to be cool which has the opposite effect in the end.

i don’t quite understand what the metaverse is but this whole thing is dumb. the whole name change is dumb too, i think they need to fix things before jumping onto another thing.

I don't use Facebook anymore, but I think it's decent. I still don't understand why they decided to switch the name to that, but I haven't used it in years anyways.

Stupid, any kind of Metaverse/NFT/etc. is just desperate trying to cling onto trends and should be banned.

never heard of metaverse, but based on this thread it seems like a rebranding for facebook. it seems a little sad to me honestly, just let the platform die already.

although virtual reality space has always been really neat to me and i see a lot of future in business in a virtual reality setting so its a shame to me that this is being funded/pushed (not sure about it too much because all i did was look this up for a total of 10 seconds) by mark zuckerberg. his involvement makes me not want to have anything to do with it.

hopefully someone else will start up a competitive virtual world, because i think it would be really cool! i wouldnt mind being a virtual worker in some cafe or fun educational setting. finally we could have aquariums without having to actually keep live animals in them (i used to love them as a child but the last few times i went i just felt so sad bc they didnt seem like they had enough space). schools could be held in virtual reality also with no risk of shootings or catching covid. of course there is the issue of accessibility, but i would hope that wouldnt be as much of an issue once something like this is up and running and used by a lot of people. it would be so cool to visit other parts of the world and interact with others and become immersed in different languages and cultures without all the travel.

please forgive me if ive totally misunderstood the concept lol i didnt look into this much and am kind of letting my head run wild with the idea ^u^; again i want nothing to do with supporting zuckerberg, i cant believe he even still exists in the technological field. shouldnt he have been shunned by now .-. just go away, mark

I'm not into the idea. Zuckerberg's ambition with the metaverse is the exact opposite of what I have been trying to do with my life in recent years. I think we could all do with putting a little more distance between ourselves and social media, personally.

It's terrifying. Zuckerberg is shifty as hell anyway, so not exactly keen to see him become the master of a universe. That guy has no soul, you only have to look into his cold soulless eyes. I also hated how much emphasis he put into his ramble about people's online presence being important. Surely we want to move away from that, rather than make it more important?
