Thoughts on country music?

Given the recent thread about rap music, I think these are the two music genres people either love or hate. I have an interesting relationship with country music. I don’t hate it. In fact, it’s been my most listened to genre for a long time. I just don’t fit the stereotype of someone that listens to this type of music, so I don’t talk about it much at all.

I hate to generalize, but I found that mostly far-right conservatives listen to it, which has me a little embarrassed (wrong word?) that I enjoy it despite listening to other genres, as well.

I’m mostly into older country, but I’ll listen to some of the newer stuff.

What are your thoughts on the genre, and do you listen to it?

For background, I liked it at a young age because my dad always listened to sad music, including break-up songs and songs that were just generally unhappy and sad to listen to. I found most country songs fast-paced and had a happier sound to them. I got into it myself without any influence from relatives. Though, my school bus driver from grades 9-12 having it on the radio all the time may have played a part.

Johnny Cash is probably the only artist I'm even MILDLY familiar w/ and like. I'm sure there are others I can listen to, I just haven't found them yet. I try to keep an open mind.

I don't care for most of it. I do like the song More Where That Came From by Dolly Parton. It was in some Target commercials when I was a kid and it makes me nostalgic.

I had some relatives that listened to only country music.. which they considered bluegrass and mountain music as part of that as well. I don't know how many people really throw those together. Maybe they interpreted country as rural, and they came from the mountains.
I do like some country music. I don't or wouldn't go out and choose country on the radio or at the store however. I prefer lyric less music or just rock. I also like classic rock by my definition. (I don't consider 90s rock as classic while alot of people do now, and what would that make classic rock? Dusty?)
My grandma was super into Allen Jackson and called him purdy. She had some of his CDs but she mostly used the radio for her music, or sometimes the TV if there was a concert on of someone she liked at the time.

Never been a huge fan of the genre but there are some country artists whose work I do enjoy listening to such as Dolly Parton or Johnny Cash.

Some country music is good. I want to say like, ‘80s and ‘90s country, but The Chicks and Faith Hill in the 2000s are nostalgic to me. I also like Jo Dee Messina, and feel like we don’t hear about her as much. My mom likes Reba McEntire, Kenny Chesney, and The Judds.

For a while, I was a Blake Shelton fan and loved “Honeybee” and “Boys ‘Round Here.”

I was in a music appreciation class in college and I had to compare and contrast country with rap music. They are surprisingly similar, if you think about it. Both are about hard times, heartbreak, and how they feel overlooked by people in charge. Urban and rural struggles might be different, BUT the core message of their songs are similar.

My mom always has the country channel playing at her place. The songs tend to get stuck in my head or even enter my dreams. Makes me wanna play the banjo in the summertime

I don’t mind some of the older stuff from the 60s and 70s by artists like Johnny Cash or Conway Twitty. Even the Pointer Sisters during that time are pretty good since that was their country music phase and they were talented enough to break the color barrier of the Grand Ole Opry stage. Garth Brooks is okay. It’s the country music that leans too much into religion or politics that I don’t like very much. I’m not a Toby Keith fan but I can respect the fact that he was an avid supporter for social equality and a major ally to the LGBTQ community which is surprising to learn considering how much politics and religion were used in his lyrics. When I lived in the group home, the van’s radio was often tuned into the country music station and that station was all the dollar store would play and I sort of got used to it as background noise.

There is only one country band that I think are a local region band and not really national that I can’t stand because I think that they sound awful and they recorded a really really bad cover of that “If You Could Only See the Way She Loves Me” song by Tonic. The vocals are horrible and it literally sounds like a dying cat being killed by someone. Their version Joy to the World is even worse. The band is called Poverty Redneck Hillbillies or something like that and they are some of the worst singers I’ve ever heard and apparently they’re popular in West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania.

Texas boy here and I like country music. Not ALL country music, though. Not even every song from a particular artist.

Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen are my current favorites.

I enjoy some country music, Reba McEntire is my favorite. However, it's not a genre I listen to every day. I need to be in the mood for it.

It's definitely not my go to music, but when I am around other people who love it, I rather enjoy it in the background.

Personally I don’t like the genre; part of me want to say I like it more than rap, but at the same time, there has been some rap that I liked and I can’t say there is any country I liked. I’m quite picky about music. I mostly like instrumental (video game music), rock/punk/metal/alternative, some JPOP (individual songs). I like a little pop (mostly old stuff since the newer pop I can’t stand except for one artist but he has been around for a good amount of time).

I like the older, more folksy sounding stuff like Dolly Parton! I don’t like the stuff about trucks and beer, hahaha. It’s never really a go-to genre, but I do love Dolly a lot, so I make an exception for her.

Love it! My go to genre when I'm feeling tired or down. Love 80s country the most. Reba McEntire and Morgan Wallen are my currents fav country artists.

Sorry if this comes off as strong and not to offend anyone who likes it but I can't stand it. This is literally the only genre I will never listen to and will go out of my way to change the music.
