The "I learned something new today!" Thread

Beatrix Potter (best known for writing “Peter Rabbit” and “Jemima Puddleduck”) also wrote a research paper on fungi reproduction. However, since she was a woman, she couldn’t present it to the Linnaean Society. A male botanist read her paper instead. They still dismissed it.

In 1997, the society officially apologized for refusing to acknowledge Beatriz’s work.

So this might sound weird, but I didn’t realize Michael Polansky (Lady Gaga’s fiancé) was 46 or 47. (According to Wikipedia— they don’t know the exact year.) I assumed he was in his late thirties, like her. He has a youthful look about him!
You started the weird so let's go there 😆

He, apparently is the same age as me. So, next time I see Lady Gaga, I am going to steal her heart from this loser.

For those who don't know my sarcasm, I am lucky to get the time of day from literally anybody 😆

It's one of the reasons I never really cared for buffet restaurants and haven't went to one now that I'm not a kid. At least not ones in the states that aren't as upscale. I've seen people just grab food with their hands, finger eat it and then dip back, sneeze/cough before handling the spoons, ect. It's just gross.
oh for sure! people are disgustingggg. we can't control what happens in a restaurant kitchens either, i've heard stories. another reason to cook instead of dining out 😬

I try not to think about the germs. I guess I take my chances in sharing food? I share food with my coworkers on a regular basis. I feel like we are just as likely to get "disgusting" food from any restaurant, whether it's fast food or fancy dining.

You are right to just cook your own food though, especially if you are a germophobe. The food you cook is probably healthier anyway!

I worry about food that's left out for a period of time more than other people picking through it. Potluck picnics for example... we share the food, but, some of it is left out in the open for a few hours, and people keep coming back for more. 😫

I've always wondered why we didn't get rid of rubbish and stuff that can't be recycled easily and throw it into lava etc and I've always been meaning to look it up.

Apparently, the problem with this idea is that when that stuff burns, it creates toxic fumes, which can kill plant life and cause health and breathing issues for anyone around that area. So that's annoying 😔
Really wanted to find the best way to get rid of rubbish that can't be recycled and it's as worthless as it is after being used.

Today I learned that in Animal Crossing Gamecube, Wild World and City Folk you could get minitures of some buildings, flowers and fruit trees.

Apparently nicotine can affect blood glucose levels, particularly those w/ diabetes. I'm glad I found this out 'cause I've been using nicotine in some form or another and have diabetes. Gonna be EXTREMELY conservative w/ my nicotine use now!

Sheryl Lee Ralph’s mom was a Jamaican fashion designer who created the kariba suit. (A formal two-piece suit for men. It was a symbol for decolonization.)

I decided to play Cooking Mama on my Switch today, but the game suddenly crashed mid-session. That’s never happened before so I looked it up to see if that was an issue and to my surprise, I found out the game had actually been pulled and had some controversy around it. I had no idea until now, definitely something new I learned today.

Probably a bit late to the party, BUT I didn’t know you could give villagers food (as in cooked dishes) in New Horizons. Shari was happy when I gave her thumbprint jam cookies, so she gave me a blossom dress!

Tommaso Dei Cavalieri— Michelangelo’s muse and lover— not only inspired Jesus in his Sistine Chapel painting, but some of his other artworks as well.

Here’s what I didn’t know previously— 30 of Michelangelo’s 300 poems were about Tommaso. One of the most famous ones— known as “Silkworm” is where Michelangelo says he wants to be Tommaso’s clothes. 🥵💕

And some people insist they were “good friends”! 🙄

Yesterday, I learned that Quora answers have comments on them. For some reason I’d always assumed that either they didn’t, or they did, but you’d need to be signed in to view them. But nope, they 100% exist and anyone can see them. Although the post I saw had really stupid people commenting so I kind of wish I didn’t learn this.

I also learned about the origins of “bench Tails” today. I’d felt like I’d seen the picture before so I did research and found out where it came from. Very regrettably. Hearing about what happens in the comic was enough for me to want brain bleach so I definitely DID NOT read it myself, but that is disgusting. Horrific. I knew Sonic was home to some weird fan creations but Jesus.

According to her documentary about her mom Jayne Mansfield, Mariska Hargitay’s biological father was not Mickey Hargitay (as previously thought), but singer Nelson Sardelli. He is still alive.

Recently, I learned that you can destroy trees in Breath of the Wild with remote bombs. Two weeks ago, I cleared out a chunk of forest just with these bombs. No more weapons shall be wasted on trees!

I remember that! It was a big issue at the time. There were accusations that the game was digging information from users for crypto-mining or something, something about the game not meeting the agreed upon standards and they were asked to fix it but the company ignored the request and released without their approval and then legal issues happened that pulled the game from sale or something.
