the end of ugly villagers?

I REMEMBER THAT VIDEO NOOO HER UNIBROW IS SO CUTE (ᗒᗩᗕ)
I don't remember it being a video, but maybe I saw something else. I remember it just being a image and someone mentioned they fixed her face or something along those lines after editing out her unibrow. They of course got a lot of heat for it.

I swear it was a video I can't remember who it was by ( ;∀;) I think the same person tried to redesign barold but I'm not sure

most of the discourse around "ugly" villagers is super lighthearted and silly, but there's this little minority that take it too far, and it really irks me. they are ultimately cartoon animals so i won't read too far into it but the genuine anger that some people express at a virtual hamster for not being visually appealing enough starts to make me wonder about how those people respond to real life animals, or even people.
tangenitally, i also think that that minority are part of the problem with all of the "cosy games" cropping up; the developers treat vibes or aesthetics as the sole reason people play these games, and they shy away from any potential friction - meaning that there can't be any unappealing characters. these games feel so empty, there's nothing of substance to them, they exist to look good in screenshots. obviously that's not the sole issue, and chucking in a bunch of weird looking NPCs wouldn't fix them, but it's one of those little things that when combined with everything else, is just a bit naff.

yeah i definitely think there's an aspect of like...avoiding weirdness to appeal to a wider audience, which alienates the most dedicated audience. if that makes sense...

It does make sense. AC wouldn't be half as much fun without the wide variety of characters it contains. I certainly don't want all of them in my town but I'm glad they're there (and this is adding a lot of enjoyment to the hotel update), even if I don't like looking at them so much.

I am probably not answering correctly but I have a love for the "ugly" villagers. Rodney is probably number one on my list who is regarded as ugly and hated. I absolutely love the little dude and I have made that clear for a long time. Actually, my island is full of unpopular "ugly" villagers... maybe I have different tastes or a soft spot for them.

I hope this isnt the end of them 😔

Rodney has visited my town as a hotel guest. I think he's adorable. And a lot of villagers other people love are off-putting to me, then there are those that almost everyone thinks are really cute. In the end it boils down to personal taste.

Another thing about villagers is that with a game that's so creative, like NH, where an entire theme can be picked and villagers chosen to fit into that theme, none are unimportant. I like a wide variety and within certain parameters it doesn't matter who comes through my town, but someone with, say, a cottage style island isn't going to want a villager like Fuchsia. On my island, though, her house has its own little place near a lake, with a pink hammock in her yard, and as soon as I get it finished will have a bed of pink tulips (and a few other flowers to break that up).

So maybe other games focus more on being absolutely cute (say like "Garden Paws" which I did buy because it's so darned cute, and although I played it quite a bit is a buggy mess) but I really doubt AC ever will because at its core that's just not what it is.

I honestly think in future, the ‘ugly’ villagers from previous title will still 100% be included in future titles, maybe a bit of toning down on new designed characters given there trying to portray as a cute available to play for all type of game, which would be a shame in my opinion as i feel like the variety of looking villagers gives the game and islands more of a unique feature, as we are always given atleast one villager we moan about when starting up a game, were all guilty of it!😅

I don't think there's a wrong way to answer this thread. Every villager is going to have someone that likes their design and someone that won't. And even the villagers others deem 'ugly' or not as cute are often loved. Rodney and Hazel are two examples of this. They both have a lot of love from the community. And during this years Lunar New Year Buck got really far in the votes for the year of the horse. Even though compared to the others his design is (let's be honest) not as popular as Colton, Savannah or Papi.
