A TV cooking competition has taken a terrifying turn for a Tasmanian contestant, who says she's received death threats.
Nicknamed the "Tassie Tiger" for her catty comments on My Kitchen Rules, Melanie Maddock said she had received death threats and was the victim of online abuse since appearing on the show.
"I've had death threats on Facebook and things have become quite serious," she told New Idea magazine.
"People have been trying to work out where I live so they can send the threats to my house."
Speaking to News Limited, Ms Maddock said she now regretted filming the Seven network series. She said the threats had left her fearing for the safety of her family.
"The person who made the indirect threat [on Facebook] was trying to find out how he could get our home address so he could send a threat in the mail," she said.
Ms Maddock said her husband James, with whom she appears on the program, received a phone call from a disgruntled viewer.
"He got a call on his personal mobile a couple of days ago from a horrible man who told us sarcastically to 'keep up the good work'," she said.
"This upset James greatly and has surprised and scared us that people have gone to the trouble of finding our phone number.
"If further threats are made we would most definitely contact the police."
In the New Idea interview, Ms Maddock said she was totally unprepared for the negative backlash, including being labelled "*****y" and "an absolute cow" over her comments about the food prepared by other contestants.
Several hate pages have been set up on Facebook, including one with almost 1200 fans.
The "We love Melanie from My Kitchen Rules" page has just 13 fans.
A Channel 7 spokeswoman said the network was taking the threats seriously and had reported the offensive pages to Facebook, in the hope they would be removed.
"Unfortunately, we have no direct control over content on this site," she said.
Seven's answer to the Ten network's juggernaut MasterChef is proving a ratings winner with 1.4 million viewers tuning in last Monday and Wednesday.
More than 1.5 million people watched Ms Maddock and her husband cook for the other contestants and judges Pete Evans and Manu Fieldel on Tuesday's episode.
Ms Maddock raised ire last week after labelling a contestant's dish "********".
The network spokesperson yesterday apologised "to anyone who was offended by her words".
Ms Maddock's treatment of her jazz musician husband has also come under scrutiny.
Viewers claim she is bossy, "belittles" him and takes credit for his work whenever it is praised by the judges.
Ms Maddock defended her critical comments of other competitors, claiming she was just being honest.
"The person they're seeing on TV is not me at all, I'm honest but I'm never mean," she said.
"It's like watching a completely different person.
"I am concerned, as this has upset my two kids. They have been looking forward to us being on TV for so long. We have asked my son to stay away from Facebook as the comments were upsetting him too much.
"I will be devastated if this negativity continues as I am concerned how it will affect my family.
"Yes [I have regrets about doing the series], as I did this to make my kids proud. I feel like they have been let down."
One viewer wrote on the MKR Facebook page: "keep speaking to your husband the way you do and i (sic) wouldnt (sic) be suprised (sic) if you end up cooking for one!".
Ms Maddock said the vitriolic abuse was largely confined to online forums.
"Everyone has been amazingly supportive down here. The people who love us know who we are. The people who meet us are surprised that we are actually very friendly," she said.
Sydney sisters and current program front runners Sammy and Bella Jakubiak said Ms Maddock was a "great person".
"This has been blown out of proportion. Melanie is a fantastic cook and a great person and she's the only one who has really worked in the industry and so she's very critical," Sammy said.
"She'll point out everything that's wrong but she's still scoring fairly."
