Terraforming help

Hi guys! Iv just unlocked the terraforming and water scaping feature but I’m struggling with ideas for my island. Where did everyone start first and if your open to sharing pictures of your ideas would be a great help, I don’t have online yet so can’t visit other islands just yet! Thank you

What’s your map like?

I just started thinking of the different areas in my town and concentrated on getting them set up one at a time. Once I had all the areas, I thought about how to link them up. My town has 7 distinct ‘areas’ that I knew I wanted to have, so I just built them up and then connected them

When I first got it, I had such a hard time putting into action what I envisioned with everything scattered there so I leveled my map and started with nothing. I cut off all my trees and removed all rivers and cliffs. Then I started building up portion by portion. This is a very extreme move though and I understand not a lot of people would wanna do it. For one, it takes a lot of time especially since I don’t TT. Another thing, you’d lose a lot of days not being able to make much money within your island since there are no trees and no rivers. Most importantly, don’t do this if you get discouraged easily because the first few days my island looked like literal trash and people who are easily discouraged may develop feelings of wanting to reset if they see their islands like that. Now though, it’s slowly coming together and I’m very happy with my little progress.

What I did personally is flatten my whole island and then use the island designer to come out with a layout. Taking down walls takes FOREVER tho so I personally don’t recommend doing what I did lol

I didn't have a lot that I wanted to change about my island, so I just neatened up the cliff face, so I could snug houses in and line them up and cut into the cliffs where I want inclines. As far as the water feature, I only added a small waterfall to the one at the top of my island.

Razing everything would have been far too overwhelming to me!

Do you mean you got rid of all cliffs forever? That is something I wanted to do, and still plan on doing at some point, but atlast the game spawns specific fish (and maybe bugs) in the cliffs only.

Oh no not forever. I just flattened everything out cuz I wanted to move my cliffs around to different spots
I tried going with a fully flat island but it just didn’t look right

I got rid of all body of water and flatten my terrain. Got rid of all cliffs and waterfalls.

Need a clean blank state. This is my island now, now time to design it the way I want. It so easy to make cliffs and to make it look nice, I'm not sure why other people are having trouble with it or fear they will ruin their island landscape.

This is why, if I was actively trying to unlock terraforming, which I'm not (I'm sorry I stand by my decision as negative as it was), I probably wouldn't terraform. I don't know what to do to make a good terrain...and I'd mess it up in the process and be forced to restart my island. And lose Sly T_T
