StreetPass and Multiple Player Characters

Something about StreetPass, the Happy Home Showcase, and the badges you earn that I'm curious about. When the game tallies up how many times you have StreetPassed other ACNL players, does it specifically count the number of StreetPassings themselves actually took place or mark it once you've visited the house in the Showcase?

And in a town where there are multiple player characters, if the answer to my first question is the former, does it count for every player character, or if the latter, would that mean each has to make individual Showcase visits?

For streetpass, every time you streetpassed someone you will see them in the front of the HHS. The game counts that number. You don't actually need to visit their houses to be marked.
For multiple characters, I think, for example, if you streetpass 3 people on that day, then each character who is currently living in your town will receive 3 for their badge count.
