I had the weirdest thing happen this morning. I had a trade set up and someone was coming to my island so I opened my gate and got the Dodo code. I only messaged him with it so when someone showed it, I assumed it was the guy doing the trade. I dropped my items. They picked each up and dropped again like they were doing a touch trade. I messaged back that he could keep them but he said he was having trouble getting on my island. It wasn't him but some random person! They asked if they could look around. I asked how they got the code and they left right after the real guy showed up. Luckily, they didn't take the items or hurt anything but I have no idea how they ended up on my island. Any ideas? It has literally only been open for about 3 minutes and I only gave the code to one person. Did he give it out? Or did I somehow do something to cause this? If I had set up the trade, I would've just let the person look around my island, no problem but when she asked it weirded me out. I've done a lot of trades lately but each with a new code. Now, I'm worried about doing them at all.

That is so strange! Only thing I can think of is that guy gave it out to his friend for some reason? Which is obviously extremely uncool, but it is impossible to prevent total strangers from doing so when you share your code, I guess. Otherwise maybe he was entering another person's code, typed it wrong, and got yours? But the chance of that happening is just so ridiculously low lol.

Maybe they had a Dodo code and put in one wrong letter or number and somehow found themselves visiting your island. That is really weird. I don't know how Dodo codes work, but I'd just ask for a persons Switch code and remove them after the trade is completed. Also, do you ask for the person's in-game name and island? That might help out because then you'll know who you'll be encountering by their name or if you plan on visiting their island, you'll know which destination to choose.

Maybe the stranger was actually meant to visit someone else's island and typed the wrong dodo and this accidentally bought him to ur island instead? There would be a very rare chance of this happening tho...

I had that happen when someone came to my island to adopt a villager. I'd PM'd them a Dodo code and they came over but then all of a sudden someone else was flying in. I freaked out and shut my Switch off O.o Was so weird.

The Dodo code can either be shared, a person can accidentally type in a wrong letter/number, or they can intentionally put in random letters/numbers to see if there's an island they can go to.

The Dodo codes are not completely private. Being randomly generated by the game means that others can randomly type them in and come to your island. That's why they warn you in-game that strangers have the possibility of coming. I know Dodo codes are more convenient than friending people, but that's definitely a risk of using them. It's a small risk, but can happen.

All good thoughts on this. I don't usually ask for their name and island so I'll start doing that. When I invite for turnip exchange, I do put up a fence so they can't go anywhere. I guess I could do that for trades, too. Just a pain. This guy did ask to come to my island even though it was his trade, so might be he gave it out. Or, as you all mentioned, could be someone tried a random code. Oh well. No harm but it'll make me more careful from now on. I pretty much trust people on this game and most deserve it so I'll not let this weird thing spoil that. :)

That's scary. It ended well, but could have been awful.

I always send my name and island when I go to pick up a trade. I've never been asked, but people seem appreciative.

I think the person you were doing the trade with gave the other person your code, sadly.
I've heard of similar situations occurring. Some people claimed also that they never disclosed the code but I don't buy it.
I think it would be a huge coincidence to get your EXACT code at the time you were doing a trade.

I agree that the only thing I can see happening here is someone randomly typing a code and getting yours randomly or the guy you made a deal with shared the code, whatever their motives may be. It’s way too coincidental that someone would randomly find your island right when you’re expecting someone else to come, though..so I’d suspect you may be dealing with someone shady possibly.

I think they might have done it as a prank and their intent might not have been to steal anything but just confuse you.
Who knows... maybe some people even get a kick out of reading about things like these online.
It's still very uncool but that would explain why the first person didn't take anything as that probably wasn't even their motive.

I feel like they just entered a random dodo, people do this when theyre bored lmfao. or, just entered a dodo they needed to head to but switched a letter/number out for one that happened to be the key to your island!! dodo codes are randomly generated, meaning if someone got the code 12345, the database would check if its in use, if it is? then it'll get you another code that could end up being: 12346 or maybe even 12344!! So it's totally possible someone wanted to visit random islands by keyboard mashing in random combos till they worked, or they just mistyped lmao.

But statistically, the possibility of generating that exact code is very low which is why it seems very unlikely to me and is most likely due to the trader disclosing the code.

I was also thinking maybe someone was punching in random codes and got lucky. The other person may have given him the code but I don't see what he would gain by doing so. The good thing is in nh people can't do as much damage as in previous games. Since people can pick up items that have been dropped I would suggest you make sure there is nothing laying around(even as decoration) if u are having people over that u don't know.

That's crazy, I've never heard of that happening before. It's really dumb for someone to give out the code to someone else and for me, it makes me weary to trade with that person again. This is why I usually ask for island name and in-game name whenever I trade so this doesn't happen by mistake and so I know who to expect. I'm glad they didn't try to destroy and take everything though.

If you press - while someone is on your island, you can also view their passport. It's more likely that the trader shared the code on accident or purpose, rather than someone randomly guessing it.

but what does someone get out of sharing the code for a trade of items they want lol and are paying/trading stuff for?

I feel like people just wanna assume everyone has malicious intent, its really strange. :[

Just to prank the person - as I said.
Maybe they thought it would be fun to confuse the OP.
The chance that you could guess someone's code at exactly the same time they were doing a trade is so minuscule, I just don't buy it - sorry.
And some people seem to have too much time on their hands.

Statistically speaking, for 5 character codes, A-Z and 0-9, that would make it 33 ^ 5 possible codes (I,O,Z excluded from Dodo Codes).
And yes, while it is very unlikely, it's not impossible. Look at the lottery for example.
I'm not saying that they 100% guessed the code by chance or that the person 100% shared the code either. Who knows, maybe there was a glitch in the system. But you should honestly never rule out the odds.
A shock for sure for OP, but at least nothing major happened. It didn't seem like a "prank" to me either per se, just a "What is happening and what am I doing here?" moment.
