Anyone have a youtube channel? I've always wanted to make one but didnt think I could. But then I started
watching Leafyishere, Pyrocynical, and Luna.

Leafy is 20, Pyro is 18, and Luna is 17 (same age as me) which really inspires me to do Youtube.

But I don't really know what to do. I don't have any recording gear or software and a tiny laptop that hardly has any storage. Plus I thnk it would be fun to do life stories and comentaries like the three youtubers mentioned above, but I don't know if that would be something good to start with? Maybe start with gaming videos? Again I don't have much space for anything.

And it's not like I expect to get tons of subcribers, it would just be a hobby, not a job.

ANy advice?

You shouldn't start with great equipement . Just start with basic things you have , than if you like the thing just buy equipement and enjoy yourself !

Most YouTubers have started out with it being a hobby for them, not a job. This includes even PewDiePie. Most YouTubers also start out with pretty bad equipment. If you compare the quality of their first videos compared to now, it's hugely different.

So I think you can definitely do it.... But you still may need to buy SOMETHING, depending on what you have.

Unless you want to be known as a gaming channel, I wouldn't suggest starting off with gaming, unless you can get noticed that way (playing old/rare games). But starting from scratch with something like minecraft or an overly-done game is not likely to get you anywhere. Along with vlogs, something to do might be reviews. Reviews of what? That's up to you. But people always want reviews of things before they buy something, and they'll look on google and youtube to find people reviewing things.

That's a good idea.

Like you said, I think gaming would be fun to do, maybe I should start searching for old/rare games.

Another thing is that I'm not sure what to use for recording and editing.

If you'll be doing gaming videos, then I'd like to advise you not to speak until you get a good microphone if at all. There are just some channels that can make do without the annoying 'uhhs,' sneezing, eating, background noise, etc.. Plus some are just not good at talking in general :L

I have a pretty good headset, I just need a usb so i can use both the headphones and mic at the same time, which costs like $7

I USED TO have a YouTube Channel, and one of my videos managed 1,100 views (which I'm so pathetically proud of). I just filmed with my iPhone and used videofxlive. All I would say is have fun, and don't concentrate too much on views/subs, just enjoy making them :p

Is there any good (hoepfully free?) recording and editing software

if you're into drawing, you could do speed paints. as for tutorials, is there anything you feel confident in doing to the point where you feel good in teaching others how to do it? this goes for graphic art, sewing, programming, etc

No I don't have any good skills like that. Also speed painting is impossible for me

I've been wanting to make videos for a long time, things I've really wanted to make videos of are videos of me playing video games, videos of me doing art or nail art or some kind of tutorial, I also think it'd be fun to time lapse me coloring or something. And then just making general videos about my life and stuff. I just don't think I'd get too popular but I still want to do it.

Do what you love; DO NOT do typical "top 10" and "reaction" stuff.

You're essentially "trying too hard" at that point and you won't get anywhere. It doesn't work like it used to; YouTube is saturated with that stuff. Film your hobbies, talk about interesting stuff, etc. Even if you don't get 100 subscribers until a year later, you're still successful. I used to watch a guy who got maybe 4 views average. He had over 300 videos and did gameplay videos. He was hilarious and he did it because he liked to make videos; not to get famous or to cause a scene.

I can't think of any good advice.... if it's an option though, maybe use cloud storage for keeping or storing your videos? Google Drive is just an option (although I don't have a YouTube channel myself, it does store my shorter personal videos pretty well).

Also, I was thinking about making myself a channel too, but only as a hobby. I looked into it, and even if it's just a hobby, if a channel becomes too popular, it can negatively affect your career or job future since you'll be 'famous' in a way and people hiring don't want to see "YouTube Star" on your resume. So keep that in mind if/when you make it, even though it really isn't an issue with newer channels.
