Woo! I recently bought this for N64, it's very fun. But I'm not sure I'm going to buy it for 3DS...

I was hoping somebody would make a thread about this. Is it worth the buy on the 3DS? I've heard you can finish the story mode in like an hour. Which to me is kinda' ridiculous.

And it's just local multiplayer, right?

It's definitely worth buying. It may not take you too long to finish the game, but that's only one path; the game is designed to be replayed multiple times, each time taking different paths to the final battle with Andross. Plus there's a new score attack mode that lets you replay any level at any time.

And yeah, the multiplayer is Download Play only. But it's a blast. Since it's Download Play, only one person needs to have the game, and you can play with up to three other people. I've been playing Battle Mode a lot lately, it's probably my favorite part of the game.

have you played star fox 64?
no?
either emulate it right this second, or buy this game.

you're doing yourself a disservice by not playing it.

it isn't about finishing the game, that's easy peasy once you've beaten it once/twice. what's fun is getting high scores with the hits on enemies, and earning medals. THEN, EXPERT MODE.

so, it's arcade-ish button mashing space rail shooter that's more about replaying the same levels to be better than about beating it once.

i've played it three times through on the 3ds already, and i don't even know how many times on the n64 as a kid and on project 64. i gotta say i prefer project 64 since i can use a ps3 controller, but this one does looks worlds above either other game. IF ONLY IT WAS A TV INSTEAD OF A HANDHELD SCREEN.

zoness is beautiful, especially compared to what it was on the n64. but the end credits look cheesy with the pixelated skyline (just like the n64!)

but seriously, you never played the original, tye? whaaaat

Battle Mode is the name of the local multiplayer, I take it?

I dont know anybody who actually has a 3DS, haha (besides the people I talk to online), so that mode is kind of outta' the question for me.

Why didn't they give it WiFi online multiplayer? They passed up such an awesome opportunity there, it would've been a no-questions-asked purchase for me if that was the case.

What is weird is even Starfox Command had Wi-Fi Multiplayer.
The thing that was always difficult to me was talking all of the alternate routes, completing a perfect game, and finished off weird Brain and Eye Balls Andross.

Wi-Fi would have been sweet and they soo could have fit it in, 3DS cart has like 8 gigs or something. But then again, I suppose they didn't want to make us want longer for good games.

After beating it twice, I have to say, I can't believe I never played this gem. I love it and even my brother who typically doesn't like games that don't involve the words Call of Duty or Battlefield loved it.

if only you had it ten years ago, eh?

Nope, lol. I actually have kinda played it a little before, but only the demo in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. And I sucked at it, lol. I really like the 3DS version, however. I find it much easier to control. Or maybe it's just easier for me to fly my Arwing because I can actually see the depth in 3D.

You can still play Battle Mode by yourself versus computers. It's not quite as fun as playing against a real person, but it's still fun. I've been doing that on my break at work, lol. And playing against someone online wouldn't really feel much different than playing against a computer, anyway. =P

And they didn't give it online multiplayer...because? Does every game NEED online multiplayer? Granted, it would have been a nice addition, but it's not really necessary. I'd guess the reason was because they wanted to create a similar experience to the original, which of course didn't have online.

I always went through the game with the same path on the N64.

That and all those other 64 gems I missed out on. Rogue Squadron and Pokemon were my main games.

You have a point there, all my and my brother did was fly circles around each other. I don't expect Wi-Fi to be different. And I think adding online multiplayer would have greatly helped the 3DS, I mean there's only one or two games with it right now.

Can you still unlock THIS????

yes

wanting to preserve the multiplayer being local is a lame excuse for not having a game online. a really lame one. it really was a bad decision to not have it, since the 3ds really really needs something to sell it. star fox 64 could have been it.

controls wise, it hurts my hands to play star fox on the 3ds, and i only notice the 3d on a few levels. BUT WHEN I DO.

You can?! Are you sure? I'm pretty sure they didn't include the on foot multiplayer. Doesn't look very fun, anyway, lol.

So, by your logic, any multiplayer game absolutely MUST have online or else it's lame? I don't see why it needs online. You're gonna get the exact same experience with or without online, anyway.

yes, you unlock it the same way that you would have on the n64

no, but given the circumstances of the 3ds (bad sales, nogames general, nothing but ambassador and lower sales to really push sales), star fox online would have been a great pull, and i really don't see why the game didn't have it included. it could have been great.

you say that the experience is the same online or local, but i ask you, who has people locally who want to play star fox whenever you want? it isn't a matter of the experience being the same or not, it's a matter of being able to experience the multiplayer one way or another, and having online play there for when you just feel like blasting some arwings out of the sky without having to meet up with friends or anything. not everyone bought a 3ds, and not everyone has people in a 30 foot range of them, which makes online multiplayer a very nice addition.

i'm not saying every multiplayer game needs online, but i am saying that it is a very nice addition, and this game could have had it very easily, seeing as what, 4 years ago it happened with star fox command?

also, in case you didn't read my LAST post, i pretty much said the same thing i did in this one. except i focused more on the whole "they tried to preserve the multiplayer" thing. which, if is true, is a really lame excuse still.

Really? Have you done this yourself, or do you have a link to a video or picture of it? It's not that I don't believe you, but I've seen quite a few reviews bring up the fact that the multiplayer doesn't include the Landmaster and on foot modes from the original. And I've searched for it and found nothing.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. The 3DS isn't selling poorly. Far from it. It's selling on par with the original DS at this point in its life, and the original DS came out during the holiday seasons. So, really, the 3DS is doing pretty good. And it's picking up fast after the price cut. It may not be selling as well as Nintendo expected (I'm sure they were expecting it to immediately start off with sales on par with what the DS Lite and DSi sales have been like, which are crazy high), but that doesn't mean it's doing bad at all. The media makes everything sound worse than it actually is. The 3DS just needs a little more time for sales to catch up, just like pretty much every other new console ever released (with the exception of the Wii, which was a surprise hit from the beginning).

Anyway, Star Fox 64 3D may not be the killer app that the 3DS needs (I'd argue that Ocarina of Time 3D already fills that position, though), but I don't think the addition of online multiplayer would have made very much difference in the end. Besides, Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 will be a HUGE push for the 3DS when they come out in a few months. Mario Kart 7 will definitely be the killer app in terms of online play, especially with the new features that have just been revealed (the ability to invite people to play from your Friend List, add people on your Friend List who you meet via StreetPass, see exactly what your friends are doing in Mario Kart 7 while they're online, etc.)

you say that the experience is the same online or local, but i ask you, who has people locally who want to play star fox whenever you want? it isn't a matter of the experience being the same or not, it's a matter of being able to experience the multiplayer one way or another, and having online play there for when you just feel like blasting some arwings out of the sky without having to meet up with friends or anything. not everyone bought a 3ds, and not everyone has people in a 30 foot range of them, which makes online multiplayer a very nice addition.
I was referring to the fact that you can play Battle Mode by yourself. Really, there's not much difference between playing with a computer and playing with someone online, at least in Star Fox 64 3D's case. Wanna play some Battle Mode but don't have anyone to play with? Play with computers, available any time you want!

It's a nice addition, yes, but it's not a necessary one. Don't get me wrong, I would have preferred the game to have online multiplayer, too, but it's not needed. And for all we know the online multiplayer could have turned out to be a laggy mess. There could have also been hardware limitations or troubles like there were when making Ocarina of Time 3D. Faithfully recreating a Nintendo 64 game on the 3DS may not seem like it should be hard at all, but the hardware is completely different, and even though it's better, there are still some areas that are very tricky to emulate with different hardware. The music in Ocarina of Time 3D is a good example. If you haven't read the Iwata Asks about the sound in Ocarina of Time 3D, I highly suggest you read it now.

Practically any Nintendo online multiplayer game is an laggy mess. At least all the exciting ones.

But gentlemen, surely we can all agree that this was a missed opportunity? I mean, you both make valid points.

And someone let me know when there's confirmation for the land and on foot battles, those would be cool too.

Really? What else besides Brawl is full of lag? Some games can be laggy here and there, but nothing as bad as Brawl. A lot of them are extremely smooth, like Mario Kart Wii.

And, yeah, I do agree that it's a missed opportunity. I just don't think it's anywhere near as big of a deal as people are making it out to be, though.
