Sports fans discussion

While the game was a blowout for the most part until the Chiefs started scoring some points late, and thus could be said to be a bit boring since it wasn't all that competitive throughout most of its runtime, I'm quite pleased that the Philadelphia Eagles are this year's Super Bowl Champions. While the Eagles aren't my team, the Chiefs were denied a threepeat, so I'm happy.

Just finished watching the Super Bowl. As a one time only thing, I was rooting for the Eagles since my Vikings and my husband's Ravens got knocked out. So I'm very happy with the result!

I wasn't against the dynasty or a threepeat as much as I just don't like this Chiefs team. I think they're whiny and get too much favoritism. I was very glad that the refs didn't have a major impact on the game besides two offsetting questionable calls early on.

I do wish the QB wasn't almost guaranteed the MVP award, because I thought Sweat on the defense was far more impactful by keeping the Chiefs off the board early.

Oh yeah, there were a good number of Eagles players that were more impactful in this game than Hurts. I'm not really sure why they push the QB so much for MVP awards, it kind of makes it lose its charm imo. Oh well. Congrats to the Eagles for winning though!

First thing I did was text a friend of mine who is an Eagles fan. I said "**** the Eagles... but thanks for beating the Chiefs! So much love right now!"

I am off to a bad start on my post Super Bowl posts. Mainly I used bad language and got a warning. Sorry everyone! I guess I got a little bit of Philadelphia in me for a moment!

Man, found this thread too late
Anyway, leading up to the Super Bowl, I was hoping for other teams to make it to the finals, but once we got the final two teams, I was rooting for the Eagles, so I am satisfied.

Pardon the double post

In NBA news, last night was Luka Doncic’s Laker debut. Anyone else watch?

Luka and LeBron synergized way, way better than I thought they would. My expectations were high but seeing them play was another experience. Bron has been so pumped the whole last week and the whole team looked like they were having fun with Luka there.

Apologies to Mavs fans or former fans. I am excited to see how the rest of the season pans out with Luka on the team.

Nah, no apologies necessary. I decided to place my hopes in the team still because I liked the last couple games, and after witnessing yet another player get injured and the meltdown against the Kings last night, uhhhhh yeah, I think I'm done following the Mavs for awhile for good. 💀

Thankfully the Dallas Stars are having another great season, and they have a legitimate chance at winning the cup this year. They also only have 2 OTL for the entire year, which is great since it means they're winning most of their overtime games (unlike some other sports team I may not have just mentioned...).

Only hockey can save us now... 🙏

I will be honest that I haven't been following the NBA headlines as closely as I should this year.. I didn't know Doncic went to the Lakers. There have been some big trades this year.

I am interested to see how this plays out.

As a Warriors fan, I don't feel like the recent acquisitions will get Steph another championship. Getting Billy Butler definitely seems like a last ditch effort.

But Steph has pulled out some miracles before, so I guess time will tell!

Congratulations to Alex Ovechkin for breaking Wayne Gretzky's career goal scoring record.Ovi scored #895 yesterday against the New York Islanders.

Follow up, what does this mean for hockey? Is Ovechkin now the greatest? I find it interesting when a sport adopts the greatest of all time and they become legends (Wayne Gretzky, Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan... ) then someone comes along and breaks their records. I would argue that Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback. But there are still people who argue Joe Montana or others...

Where does Ovechkin fit in?

From what I've read most hockey pundits acknowledge Ovechkin as the game's greatest goal scorer but not its greatest player overall. He's generally regarded as one of the greatest NHL players of all time but those same pundits usually have Wayne Gretzky or Gordie Howe as best overall with Ovechkin somewhere in the fringes of the top ten.Ovi's still an active player with a chance to win at least one more Stanley Cup so he could move up after he hangs up the skates.

How come they sent out the shortest female reporter to interview the players at the final March Madness game last night? 😂 (Or maybe she wasn’t short, they were just really tall.)

Honestly, I never believed anybody would be able to beat Gretzky's goals record when I first started watching hockey. Even when the possibility of Ovechkin breaking the record became real, I didn't think he'd manage to do it this season. So the fact he’s not only broken it but has done it in the same amount of career games that Gretzky played is truly amazing. It's also amazing to think that despite losing 155 games to non-hockey reasons (04-05 and 12-13 lockouts, 19-20 and 20-21 seasons affected by the pandemic), he still managed to do it despite missing out on those games during some of his prime scoring years. It’s wild to think he could still possibly hit 900 this season, and he has another year left on his contract after this to keep adding to his record. It’s hard to imagine his record getting broken any time soon. I know Auston Matthews has the best chance of the current players, but given all the injuries so far in his career, along with some inconsistency in his scoring, I don't think he'll have the longevity to reach ~950 goals.

To put it simply, no. The consensus for the 3 greatest hockey players ever has been Wayne Gretzky, then Mario Lemieux, then Bobby Orr for the longest time. It'd take somebody truly special to break into that top 3. Even amongst players from his era, Ovechkin is considered second behind Sidney Crosby as the best. That said, Ovechkin is widely considered the greatest goal scorer now, and until the day his record is broken, it'll be hard to argue it's anybody else.

Great response! Do you think time and history will tell a different story? Or maybe the greats grow larger in our mind over time to the point that it's nearly impossible for an athlete to be thought of as the greatest after their predecessors?

I mentioned Tom Brady as being the GOAT, in the NFL, but I know people who refuse to let go of Joe Montana as the greatest. Montana won less championships than Tom Brady, but he also never lost a Superbowl, in an era where quarterbacks didn't have rules to overly protect them.

Babe Ruth may be the greatest to ever play baseball, but he played before black integration. How would he have compared to Jackie Robinson in equal territory?

This is just my opinion, but I think Michael Jordan is one who should still be considered the greatest. He played in an era with very few rules when it came to fouls... the NBA was extremely physical back then and fouls werent called for minor things like they are today (in fact the players were pretty brutal, sneaky punches and knees to private areas to name just a few... ). The stars are so protected now that the refs call fouls for the current "greatest" getting his beard touched and acting Ike Tyson punched him *coughlebroncough*

What are your thoughts on "the greatest"?

Anyone plan on watching or following any of the NBA playoffs? I was happy the Warriors won their play in game... those one game playoffs make me nervous.
