If you want to invest the time, picking up the islands' flower petals will stop flower bugs from spawning and make it more likely that the water bug spawns You could go further and get rid of all the trees, stumps, and rocks as well but that's extra effort that you probably wouldn't need to spawn one, as they aren't *that* difficult to spawn. Regardless, good luck
Unfortunately, during the time they're available for capture, the giant water bugs will constantly spawn on any islands with freshwater that can also spawn tarantulas. And this was a problem even before the insect nerf. Honestly, your best bet, if you're still tarantula hunting is to pack at least 4 to 5 nets and hope you land on bamboo island.
I've found it's much easier to catch atlas moths this time of year. I'm hoping to get back into the bug hunting in the summer when the palm tree beetles start spawning though.
I already cleared everything away, so all that's appearing is tarantulas and warfroaches. I've been looking for the past few minutes, but still nothing appearing.

Also, I'm looking only for the giant water bug, not tarantulas. I just can't find a giant water bug...
