So if you haven't heard, Sony have confirmed they're working on bringing the ability to play PS2 games to the PS4:

?We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation?

At the moment I kind of want to know whether they mean that the PS4 will physically be able to read and run PS2 discs, or whether PS2 games will simply be available to purchase through the PlayStation Store. I really hope it's the disc thing though; most of my favourite games from my childhood were on PS2 and it would be really great to be able to play them on a current console.

What are your thoughts?

Shouldn't they be working on backwards compatibility with PS3 games instead of going all the way back to the PS2? It sounds to me it can either mean an emulation or remakes of the games.

They should do for all PS generations tbh. But yeah good they are doing something at least..

I agree with this, why PS2?

Though I think backward compatibility with all three older Sony consoles should definitely be something that happens for the PS4, the PS3 seems like the more logical place to start with.

I mean, an argument to go with this along with the PS3's own library is that a good portion of the 'best of PS2' is already on PS3 via HD releases (yano, since the 2010's have been the 'decade of HD re-releases). It's kind of like "here's PS3 backwards compatibility, and whilst you're waiting for PS2 emulation, here's a bunch of HD releases of some PS2 classics to keep you occupied".

Then again, PS2 is the console that has been unsupported for the longest. Every PS3 is backwards compatible with PS1 games, but only a few original PS3's played PS2 games. I guess it would at least make up for that.

This is great but yeah I agree, they should work on all of them. A lot of my favorites are on PS.

Update:

Due to leaked info it looks like we won't be able to play actual PS2 discs, but they will be upscaled/enhanced remakes made for download? In a leaked video for an upcoming Dark Cloud PS4 remaster, in the description it stated:

"PS2 Classics and PS2-formatted discs are incompatible with the PS4 system."

Obviously this is 'leaked' information, so no-one is sure how reliable it is, but it'll be sad if this is the case...

// fingers crossed for crash bandicoot

It's probably going to be digital only backwards compatibility. Glad my old PS2 still works.

Same here I still have my old silver console set up to one of my TV's :). I read they were going to do this, I wondered if they'd sell an add on to play old disks but digital may be the better way for them.

Digital only makes sense, since you'll likely have to buy them.

What motivation do they have to otherwise implement disc based emulation? Unless they started printing old PS2 games again, there's no profit in it for them, unless physical emulation is enough to dramatically boost PS4 sales.

I ammmm hyped for this, My favorite franchise is Xenosaga, they are games that where my childhood and hit me right in the feels just thinking about them <3 I don't mind if I have to buy them remakes in disc as long as the story stays the same. I wouldn't mind buying them digital either, I'd buy my own ps4 if needed lol

EVERYONE GO PLAY ROGUE GALAXY RIGHT NOW IF YOU NEVER HAVE BEFORE

EVEN IF YOU HAVE GO DO IT AGAIN

I kind of need Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks again, I lost my copy years ago to a cousin.

My boyfriend just bought GTA:San Andreas for our PS3 cause it was the GTA I played the most, I don't really like GTA4 but we're getting GTA 5 soon so we'll be playing tons of GTA now. XD CJ is going to be so dang buff. We still have our PS2 but we don't use it since we got the 3.

I kind of want to get Vice City as well...

Sony are looking for fans request of games they'd like to see on PS4. This of course won't get the games on for sure, but they said they are listening. So tweet out your list with the hastag "#ps2ps4"

My list was Tekken 4+5, We Love Katamari, SSX Tricky + SSX 3, Final Fantasy XII, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks and SoulCalibur 3.

If you did a tweet, what was your list?
