Awhile ago I read ti hang on to those. For the life of me I can't remember why. What is their significance in the game?

The only thing I've experienced so far is I needed 4 cardboard boxes to create 1 medium cardboard box to gift my amiibo villager at the campsite so they can move in.

They are also quite fun to decorate with! They are nice little space fillers.

You can make furniture with it (a set of boxes, a sofa, a table... there's probably more too) and villagers at the campsite will sometimes ask you to craft cardboard furniture - so I pick all of them up just to be safe.

Cardboard furniture was rare af in New Leaf, I managed to make most of it already in NH. Don't like it as much now though.

Besides Cardboard Boxes, it is a good idea to stock up on Magazines and Books, because some recipes require them.

Umm it's really not that big a deal, you can reorder them from Nook's machine for literally just 120 bells each lol.
