So are villagers, like... not worth diddly anymore?

Been seeing a lot of villagers getting sold for very few NMTs lately. And I'm not talking about the majority of villagers that you can get using mere Amiibo Cards or anything, I'm talking like Sherbs being sold for 10 NMTs or Audies for 20 NMTs or even just for a couple million IGBs and stuff. So I guess my question is... Have villagers lost their value entirely? Not that it's much of a problem, it's actually pretty convenient for me, but I'm just confused as to how our economy works anymore...

a lot of it kind of depends on demand. like Shark said, most people who were willing to pay high prices have already obtained those villagers so demand for the popular villagers has kinda gone down. that being said, someone gave me 100NMT for Shari on nookazon which absolutely blew my mind since I was expecting to have to void her. all depends on demand and what people are looking for i guess.

Pretty much unless you have Raymond or Judy, no one is going to pay big for them.

I mean I do have Raymond and Judy but I'm not gonna sell them, they're precious XD I've only been looking for Dom lately but my empty spots keep getting filled immediately ¬___¬

Anyway, I guess that's just how things go. Makes things easier for my Dom-hunting XD

Absolutely surreal XD G'lord, I guess it's just... unpredictable.

Yeah Dom, Audie, and Sherb are still fairly popular so it makes sense other communities would still pay big for them.

For the lower tier villagers, it also makes sense in the reverse way that they would be priced decently high if someone really wants them because not a lot of people would pick them up from islands or campsites.

I gave up on selling villagers and try to give them away here. But the turnaround here is a lot slower verses other communities and there's a lot of people here with cheap amiibo cycling services.

Guess that makes sense... Well, what about NMTs? Are those still worth anything this long after the game's release?

I guess that can be generalized for the more popular or new villagers. When you see a lot of people selling these new villagers, it's normal the price goes down.

That being said, I think there are some (amiibo) villagers that fly under the radar with that generalization. I was seeking Genji on Nookazon for some time and the offers for him ranged from 50 NMT to 150 NMT. I lost a bid for him once when the bidder offered 200 NMT for him. I got Genji from another person for 120 NMT.

The fairly popular (well, not as popular as cottagecore villagers but they're pretty sought after too) ones like Kabuki and Dobie are going for at least 30 NMT now I think.

I also remember offering 40 NMT for Bea out of desperatio and because she was my ultimate favorite.

Basically I do think it depends on the community and how much someone wants the villager, asides from popularity and supply.

I got Sherb with the intention to give him away but I don't see that he's very popular anymore! It seems like in the last few weeks the market has really shifted. Nobody that's an amiibo is really worth so much anymore! I see more and more giveaways of villagers because there's no market to pay for them! I had people knocking my door down for Katt in May, I finally moved her out, and 0 people wanted her, even for free!

I don't know if people have their villagers now or what but I've seen asking prices really shift for almost all villagers, including Raymond and Judy. I recently got Judy and she was a fraction of the NMTs I would have paid for her a month ago. It actually behooved me to stop my hunt and grab her for the NMTs it was so low! Crazy!

Of the market here on the forum is to be believed then NMTs are currently at a rate of 1:1 NMT to TBT. So not much compared to before.

its probably natural since the games been out for almost 5 months now and a lot of the people who really were looking for villagers and were willing to pay big for them have gotten everyone they were looking for

it makes sense that theyre lower bc now most ppl that desperately wanted the new villagers already have them. like i just gave sherb and dom away for free in a different community. dom was free but the person gave me like 18 nmt which i was fine with lol. i feel like now "cottagecore" villagers are getting more in demand like im still surprised that dobie is rising in popularity bc so many cottagecore islands are getting him.

i think in the future there will be a change when theres another trend or when people start finding other villagers they love

Pretty much unless you have Raymond or Judy, no one is going to pay big for them.

Even those aren't as expensive as they used to be. First 100NMT's, sometimes 200NMT's and some even got to 500 to 800 and then there was a huge drop. You can get them for around 200NMT's and when doing a good search even cheaper.

It also seems like the most popular villagers will become cheaper as time goes on because they were are becoming more common in the game. Imagine how many more islands have Sherb (even among people without strong interest, who pick him up because they know he’s popular, to give away or sell) the demand may be going down because the most extreme ‘dreamie hunters’ locked in their lineups early on, and meanwhile the supply of Sherb/ Audie/ Raymond is probably really high. Shari, as an example someone mentioned above, would now be much more rare to come across on someone’s island, so unless you come across a good amiibo cycling service it will be more difficult to find her. Really nice from my perspective (a non seller) because people who couldn’t afford or find those villagers a couple month ago now can. Plus now I don’t have to feel guilty about not picking up Audie/Sherb/whoever when I run into them in my campsite or on an island.

Lots of good points have already been made about why villagers are decreasing in price - supply vs. demand and the game being out for a while now (meaning that many people have their dreamies) are pretty good reasons.

I would add though, that it seems like the acceptable price range for villagers will vary a lot depending on what site you frequent. The villagers who are the most popular/most sold seem to vary quite a bit as well. Here for example, villager trading activity isn't too high, but there's a good amount of giveaways and Amiibo shops with cheap prices.

Wish there was a historical sales tab like on eBay on here one on other sites, that'd make it a lot easier to see trends in prices!

The demand for them has definitely gone down over the months. As someone above said everyone who is willing to pay extreme amounts already has done so, but this also applies to people who are hunting for him naturally. It’s already been about 5 months since the game dropped and people have had more than enough time to island hop looking for him or using cycling services. once the amiibo with them drops I’m certain they won’t nearly as much

Demand may also be going down as people are finding new methods to get villagers like the campsite cycling method. Why pay for a villager when you can get it for free?

I don’t sell villagers. If I don’t think I’ll find them appealing I don’t bother. Once they’re on my island I consider them gifted and give them away for free. I gave Julian away about a week ago because I didn’t like him and wanted my random camper.

Amiibos provide a near-unlimited supply of villagers, and the only real cost of finding villagers is time (either in NMT hopping or by campsite resetting). Given this, the "supply" of popular villagers has begun to outweigh demand, hence why prices for villagers have fallen through the floor.
