Imo I would have been fine with the cranky or snooty villagers being more snarky, sarcastic or cynical about certain subjects. Being Snooty or cranky =/= being rude.
I mean, I did have Apollo complain to me about how "kids these days can;t do math without using a calculator" but I had to talk to him many times (while trying to avoid exhausting him) to get that dialogue.
All the people saying that villager dialogue as a whole is better than NL I can agree with (though not by much). However, I do feel as if snooty villagers were more snooty in NL. I have Purrl in both NL and NH and I swear I remember her being a bit more initially "mean" when I was playing NL. Meanwhile on her first day on my island she's chatting me up and inviting me to tea.
had a blast reading to the replies on this thread! hahah, never change guys. and i’m glad y’all see what i’m trying to see and i definitely agree. i’m not saying BULLY me either but i miss that you have to gain that trust before you become friendly with some of the personalities. it was quite fun. also, being snooty/cranky shouldn’t equal to being rude. they can have more depth aside from just giving us a vibe that they’re old & classy. you can allude that in so many fun conversations. peppies, lazies & smugs getting all the fun.
you also don’t get to meet crankies & snooties until later on, so i feel like it would have been funny if they come to your island afterwards and kept complaining about something lol. i was thinking about it and who would wanna be with someone rude on the island (since starting villagers are just 2) but isn’t it why uchi, jock, lazy, peppy, normal are first in the storyline? like i can’t imagine a snooty having a basic house as well (but that’s another topic)
my snooty called my lazy a dumbass to his face (not in those words but she basically said he was too stupid to handle) which was funny but also sad cos i love my lazy. however i have 3 snootys and they are all really nice to me and aren't snooty at all which is a shame.
Ever since Wild World snooties have been getting gradually changed into a sort of refined high society lady-like personality. They still care about their appearance but they're much less vapid and arrogant than they used to be, at least to the players.
OK, so not going to lie, this discourse is one of the worst things about being in the AC fanbase because it happens way, way too often.
My thoughts on it:
I think NH's dialogue is a little bit harsher than NL's but not as harsh as WW/LGTTC and definitely not as harsh as GC's was, but GC's was way, way too harsh, and there's honestly better stuff to bring back from the GC version in general, like the big leafy bushes and a fully interactive version of the Sports Fair that works like the Morning Aerobics (hint, hint, pls do this Nintendo, villager interaction needs more actual minigames, I love that now you can see the cards campers have in their hands and on screen)
In general I think it's more about Concerned Parents more than any Tumblr conspiracy, given how Tumblr in general seems to actually enjoy the mean villagers? (this is in no way reflective of how mean people in the ac fanbase can be at all)
Cranky villagers largely now seem like gruff old men and have done since LGTTC (they're also somehow Very Kansai like the sisterly villagers despite it being in English, props to the localisation team for doing that), and snooty villagers come across as the kind of women who love The Finer Things in life and who are very mature. This is not especially a bad thing.
I feel there should be a little bit more edge, like WW edge.
In general I can't seem to do much for the villagers at the moment aside from give them gifts and get an occasional errand, and I'm hoping this is improved when updates come along. I like both the communication and customisation elements of Animal Crossing and I feel they're both important to the game's general purpose and neither should be neglected.
Meanwhile Ankha literally spitroasted Scoot for being a musclehead (i forgot the dialogue, it just made ankha super stressed after the little talk bc scoot didnt understand what ankha said LOL)
