There were two big surprises to be found with Mario Galaxy: firstly, that it had a substantive story, and secondly, that the story was good. Pity, then, the sequel won't be doing anything of the sort.

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has said that, despite the love fans had for the first game's plot (centred around Rosalina and the adorable Lumas), "I'd like to go with as little story as possible...I've always felt that the Mario games themselves aren't particularly suited to having a very heavy story."

All well and good, except Miyamoto doesn't have as direct a role in the series as he once did. Instead, the job of creating these big Mario games now lies with Yoshiaki Koizumi, who is at odds with his mentor's stance on plot.

"Mr. Koizumi is the type of person who, whenever we're working on a new Mario game, he always wants to bring more story elements into it, as he did with Super Mario Galaxy" Miyamoto says. "But in talking with him this time, he agrees and feels that with Galaxy 2, there won't be a need for as deep of a story".

Shame!

I liked the story for the first one, that's what kept me playing. >|

I'll be disappointed, but I'll still play it. Mario games aren't ones for their stories anyway.

Meh, I actually agree with Miyamoto.
Story is meant for Zelda and Metroid and stuff. Mario was never meant to have a strong story.

I dunno, I liked Galaxy's story. But yeah, storys should mainly be left for other titles unless it's really awesome.

There was a story in Galaxy??? I kinda read those storybook chapter things, but other than that... yeahhhh... I just played it b/c I liked the fun levels/planets... not for the story (or lack thereof).

Kinda. Save Peach, get the Grand Stars, repair the Observatory, go to center of the Universe and kick Bowser's ass.

The only story i remembered when i played was...
1. get stars
2. open doors
3. kill bowser
4. save princess

come to think of it... thats in like every single mario game out there...

yeah... so how could galaxy 2 have less? either mario's just fighting bowser w/o rescuing peach, they've eliminated stars... or yeahh... one of those haha

it doesnt bother me. i didnt really care about that storybook in the first game with all the plot about Rosalina's past. I would still like the sequel.
