I bought a used 2ds off craigslist for $50 and it was a great investment. Daily streetpass items, I put all my balloons in a room of my house and can now order them through HHA. In my cycle town I can quickly breed hybrids and move them to my main town, and any villagers can be moved back and forth. Also, visiting kids can can use it instead of my xl. Not sure if I'd pay full retail on one, but if the price is right, go for it.

Congrats on getting a second one.
In my family (three people), we have 5 3DS's between us. So yeah, having two is rational and reasonable, comparatively speaking.

It makes perfect sense. All you have to do is take the situation into account. If you take your logic then every word spoken and every action ever committed by every person on the planet every day could be a terrible idea.

I personally wouldn't bother, maybe at most I'd get a 2DS but even that doesn't seem worth it to me. The only benefit is to be able to trade between towns but you can around that by trading with people who play the game (friends, relatives, people on this forum) or borrowing a friend's 3DS if it's just a quick trade. It's just not worth it for me in the long run because I don't know how long I'll be playing this game for. Maybe if I played lots of games that made it more fun I would but as it is... nah.
The only other benefit I can see is having a spare if your 3DS breaks, but if mine breaks, I'd prefer to buy a 3DS then than get one already. When I buy any other gadget I don't necessarily buy a spare in case it breaks.

Any situation where money is spent- I usually recommend caution, but it's whatevers. OP already did it, and I hope it works out for them.

Yeah...caution is always good where money is concerned - that goes without saying. But the situation has been spelled out by OP and done. I hope it works out, too.
