Should all animals be pets?

I think we can all agree that Dan the doggo will have a great time being a pet if looked after, but what about Fariel the fish, Popeye the parrot and Samuel the snake?

Not quite sure why I worded it all like that.

What my point is, how do you feel about pets that many wouldn't consider ideal? A bird is designed to fly around, not sit around in the house. A fish you can't even do much more than look at and feed. Snakes can leave pretty nasty bites.

I have mixed feelings. Like, if you want a bird or something, that's cute and all, but at the same time it'll probably live a somewhat boring life, no matter how hard you try.

I'm much the same way. I don't want a pet that spends most of its time in a cage. However there are people who let small animals roam the house rather freely and kudos to them. I would be too nervous of those animals getting eaten by my cat or dog if I get one.

a bird should never be inside imo, they're creatures who are meant to fly, a house no matter how big is totally unacceptable for a bird. im kinda unsure where i stand on ALL animals since some are domesticated but for the most part i think its wrong keeping animals as pets unless theyre domestic animals that are content being indoors and controlled by humans (dogs and cats) but its something id probably have to research more!

I agree that it is rather cruel to keep animals in cages, especially those too small for their size. They must be SO bored!

I feel bad that my cat is an indoor cat. I do as much as I can to not make her bored. I'd like for her to go outside but Id fear for her safety since there are tons of outdoor cats out in my neighborhood already.

I don't really agree with any animal being a pet or used for entertainment.

But I do understand that some animals are domesticated and are happy with their human friends, so there's nothing more to say. If an animal is happy well then it should stay that way, I have a few pets who come running up to me when I enter a room and they just lay beside me while a pet them. This just shows animals can be happy with a human, even when their locked in a house but again,we give them toys and stuff to keep them entertained when we go somewhere, right? Some should be pets, not all of them should though.

Birds and reptiles shouldn't be pets honestly, it isn't fair for them. Birds are meant to fly and reptiles are meant to be in actual habits instead of being under a heat lamp.

Fish are treated as decorations and collectables rather than pets. So they definitely shouldn't be pets because they really aren't and it's not really fair for them to be in such a small space, the same thing can be said for any animal.

Yeah I'd have to agree. I even think that a lot of domesticated dogs seem pretty miserable with their lives. Most people seem to just keep them in a cage for a lot of the day/night and tie them up outside. They should really be running around outside all day.

Good bird owners don't leave their birds in a cage all day. Usually they can fly around the house, or even outside if they've got a good enclosure. Plus, a lot of pets are rescues meaning some of these pets wouldn't do well in their natural habitats.

As for fish, unfortunately a lot of fish owners get tanks or bowls that are way too small for them but not all people do. If you've got a good tank with their necessities, they'll be fine and live their expected lifespan. "You can't even do much more than look at and feed" isn't a point against owning them, all this says is "I personally don't care about fish." Others can find them relaxing. Either way I'd rather "just look at it and feed it" than let them sit in tiny containers at PetSmart.

Snakes can bite but so can anything, and that isn't really a point against them either. It's just another "I personally wouldn't like this". If you do your research and do everything you can to avoid being bit, as well as have everything you need for the off chance you do get a bite, you'll be fine. Snakes are also often rescued as well.

Obviously people shouldn't own lions or tigers or something but there's nothing wrong with common pets so long as they're being taken care of properly.

Some species (such as tigers and sharks) are very dangerous to keep as pets. But even the safer ones aren't all that safe either.

Rat poison is possibly your biggest concern.

I have a chicken that used to roam the house she would eat the cat food and the cat wouldn't even care just like 'sup', same with my gallah, since we got 2 other cats though they don't come in anymore... my gallah doesn't want to be free, her cage is her kingdom and gets mad if anyone touches it, if you open the cage door she will just crawl out and wander, occasionally running at you and swearing, then she will go back... we found her as a baby kicked out of the nest, she was surprisingly tame.. my 2 other cats hate outside, leave the door wide open and NOPE. my 3rd cat on the other hand will bolt because he was born feral. my Alexandrian parrot wants to be free, but we caught her because she was being picked on in the wild because she didn't belong there, she was an escape avian bird, if we left her she probs would have died... I used to have pet rats that again didn't really want to be free, they would just follow you around if you left the cage door open.. I had a 3-legged frog once, but thats another story...

I don't see a problem with some snakes/some fish/some birds/etc. being kept as pets, as long as you do your research and take proper care of them.

Not all animals should be pets though, like those slow loris animals. Poor things. Definitely don't have monkeys as pets, if you want to keep your face on. In fact, I don't think most exotic animals should be kept as pets.

I do really want a hedgehog though.. and aquariums are badass. I used to have some clownfish and a few other ocean fish, including a mantis shrimp, all at different times

Also to the person worrying about their indoor cat being an indoor cat - indoor cats are so much healthier and cleaner. Especially if you live in the south - if i let my cats outside here in Georgia, they'd get fleas within a day. I used to have cats that we would let outside, two of them disappeared forever, and all of them got in to frequent fights with other cats. Not good

This just made me curious to where hamsters would go if they're not pets, because as far as I'm aware their natural habitats are pet shops and awkward crawl spaces behind the sofa.

Apparently they're warriors of the desert that travel the lands alone, mercilessly slaughtering other hamsters to protect their precious resources before taking their fallen enemy's bride as their trophy...Presumably as she fawns over their chiselled physique and gore soaked broadsword.

Hamsters are brutal.

also someone who cant take care of all the needs the animal has shouldnt have them as a pet. if you can have your cow or w/e in a good environment where it is comfortable and stuff then great but if youre going to keep your cow in the living room and never let it be outside Well Maybe Do Not

I think that it is fine to keep them as long as you provide a better environment and living conditions than the one they were previously in.

I met a woman from Ohio that even has monkeys in her home. As long as they give the animal proper care and aren't abusive to it, I'm fine with it.
