Shooting at NIU Just now...

wow, this just freaks me out. I have two siblings in college. They go to a nice, not very well known college (MCC, literally across the street from K-State) so there isn't as much of a chance of a shooting going on there, but seeing this, somebody who doesn't go to the college could do that, just like in this one.

The idea of going to college gets scarier and scarier constantly... By the time I graduate, I don't know if I'll want to go, since it seems like shootings are happening more often as time goes.

Not going to college is absolutely stupid if you are basing it on school shootings.
If that was directed at me, you've mis-read what I typed.

I said I was thinking about going with the whole Online-college thing. That's still college.

I've read a couple of posts saying that.

Online college should be your last resort really. The same thing applies. You much rather stay in your home than risk someone shooting you at a college.

You've got your opinion, and I've got mine.

I really hope no one I know was hurt.

but really, although shootings are a bit more common violence in school is probably the same now as it has always been. Just with guns that reload and fire fast make it that much worse.

Online colleges are a great idea, actually, especially in our times.

Even though I'd personally use it as a last resort, I can understand why some people would want to do that.

I've seen the U of M get bomb threats and all kinds of crazy crap... Granted, it hasn't reached this point yet, but who knows what'll happen in 2-4 years? The sad truth is that the "average teen" is slipping more and more below average every day...

The reason going to a college is a really good thing in my opinion is that you learn to live on your own as well as deal with a lot of things.

Besides these shootings can be random but the shooters often target someone who made their life miserable, at least in their head.

Exactly -- so how does one know one was not "responsible" for a wacko's "misfortunes"?

Well you can't always but if you are generally a nice and likable person why would they target you?

Either way the social learning in college is pretty important in my mind. I honestly feel that living on my own really helps you see all that your parents did for you even when you didn't notice. You learn what you need to do to live alone in an environment where there is still staff to help you with the adjustment.

Right, but looking at it from a slightly paranoid standpoint... what if they were targeting nice and likable people specifically because they were nice and likable? Like... just taking this hypothetical situation a step further... Say a guy was really troubled. So, naturally, he hated everyone around that exhibited happiness or wasn't shunned by the general community.

Maybe I'm digging too deep. In fact, I definitely am. But I'm just saying, you can never be too certain.

But I agree with you, especially coming from someone that's been homeschooled his entire life -- college is the place for REAL social learning. Not "street smarts" or any of that stuff, but actual survival skills.

What if a homeless person shot you in your house because he was targeting people in a house? What if was right behind you right now!?

What if I'M BEHIND YOU RIGHT NOW?!

We can all play that little game, and like I said, I took it too far in that hypothetical example. But I'm just saying... I can see where people are coming from when they say they'll do college online.
