selling/trading villagers?

How exactly does trading villagers work? say you have someone in boxes, if someone wanted that villager, would they have to have an open spot available? Or is it like with amiibo villagers where you can kick someone out for the villager that you want to move in?

you would have to have an open spot available and, as far as i know, a plot built for them if you did not already.
