I've been resetting a heap lately, and realised that rover disappears when you exit the train. I know this is probably just so that they could re-use the scene for travel to friends village's, but what if the meaning was deeper

Rover used to work on the trains, welcoming new players to their chosen city. Then after 2002, he decided to settle down. He became rich and famous and had an illustrious career but he was seriously in debt to Tom Nook. So, Nook hired a hit man to kill him.

After that Rover's ghost returned to the trains, to continue what he had begun in 2002. Tom Nook didn't want to be caught, so he went into the property market, after paying a large, undisclosed sum of bells to the Mafia Boss Lyle, to protect him from Copper and Booker's investigations.

I'll see myself out...

Is that why he was always hanging out in a dark attic all the time in Let's Go to the City? Maybe his spirit was trapped in that room... because it was the room he died in. Finally, after years of trying and failing to get out, his ghost escaped, and he finally got back to doing what he'd always loved most... talking to strangers on trains.

Actually, I've got something else to add to it. So you know how, when you first start up the game, you see Rover in the dark room, then he goes with you on the bus? Well, what if he was hiding from the hitman in that attic, when a child knocked on the door downstairs, looking for someone to give them directions to the bus, because they were moving to a new town far away from their family? Rover knew he should keep quiet and hide, but the child sounded so lost that he knew he had to help them, just like he used to on the trains. So he showed them the bus, he got on the bus with them, and chatted to them so they weren't lonely. He then took the bus back to the attic, intending to grab his stuff and find another hiding place, far away, in case the kid talked to Tom Nook.

But when he got back to that attic, he wasn't alone.

Aha! Who was the kid? (I am imagining Katie here). Who was in the attic? Don't leave a cliffhanger :p

The kid goes by many names... many faces... many genders...

(It's the player)

And maybe the hitman found the attic, saw Rover's belongings there, and waited for him to get back before killing him.

Or maybe... there was someone else after Rover...

Dun dun DUN!!!

He's ducking under the seats because he was supposed to be mayor and he didn't want anybody to see him.

*Laughs evilly*

Unless, that was Katie! "I want to see around...uhhh, should I be here... I think I want my mommy!"

The mystery letter at the beginning of the game is from Ghost!Rover. He *was* supposed to be Mayor...until his untimely demise at the hands of Tom Nook's hitman...

I always knew it was Rover who sent that letter!

Maybe Isabelle's in on it as well? That's why she never lets you explain that you're not actually the mayor? She and Tom Nook knew that Rover was supposed to be mayor after Tortimer retired, so they ensured that no one would notice his absence by pushing the role of mayor onto the first person that showed up after Tortimer's retirement. Isabelle never allows you to protest when she says you're the mayor, she basically forces you into the role, and she tells all the villagers that this is who the mayor is, never telling them about the other mayor.

Maybe the island was their bribe to Tortimer, to keep him silent.

Yes, it's perfect! It all makes sense!

Isabelle *looks* so sweet and nice but in reality, she is a high ranked member of a powerful criminal organisation! What has the innocent player stumbled upon when he/she embarks upon their new life in a happy village...

We should write a Hollywood movie.

WAIT! But you can see rover in the cafe of the roost sometimes!Perhaps Rover worked with red, which only fuelled tom nooks anger into the hit man assigning.... hahahaha

Rover's ghost gets bored of the train sometimes, and occasionally he'll go sit in the cafe' for a little bit, just to check and see if the new mayor is in any danger.
