River too narrow?

Hi! I have a couple of questions. If my river is narrow a little bit, does it prevent the spawning of fish and certain bugs? For the past three nights I've been looking all over for the giant water bug and I just can't seem to find it... I'm wondering if my river is too narrow in a lot of parts because not even fish spawn in those areas either. I've tried mystery tour islands too, but I seem to have bad luck finding a good island to get it to spawn as well. I even cleared those islands to get it too, but still nothing. Should I wait till I get terraforming to make the river a little wider so it can spawn better? Also, I'm not sure if it still applies in this game, but is the later months better for looking for it?

Are you on the Northern Hemisphere? Because giant water bugs won't spawn until October for Southern Hemisphere.

They appear from 7PM until 8AM, and I believe rivers 3 tiles wide is enough to spawn fish (because bridges can only be built between 3-4 tiles of water.

Bridges can span across 3-5/6 tiles, not sure on higher end but I definitely have some 5-tile long bridges.

Yes, I'm in the northern hemisphere. I just can't seem to get one to appear. Are they by chance skittish? I may be scaring them off and not noticing...

I terraformed a two tiles wide river and fish spawn there all the time, even though I haven't seen a lot of big fish yet nor any bugs. :/
I guess you should wait for terraforming to be unlocked if you're experiencing this issue, it may be possible that the shape of the river influences the kind of fish/bugs that can spawn there.

The river width definitely affects fish spawns, I don't think fish spawn if a section is less than 4x4. I'm pretty sure it doesn't affect bug spawns though- I've found the giant water bug in a narrow part of my river (though it may have swam there, it feel like they move more than the fish do).

In my experience the giant water bug is pretty rare- I see them slightly less often than tarantulas and way less often than the atlas moths (and their spawn rates may have been further reduced in the recent update). Also sometimes they're hard to see, the southern edge of a river can block them from sight if you're on the regular camera angle.

They aren't skittish, you actually can't scare them off by running or anything. The only way to get rid of them is to catch them

They are ALL OVER the nook islands if you have an extra ticket to spend

I don;t see them very often on my Island but they do spawn. I took a NMT tour last week and landed on Giant Water Bug Island though. There were 3 or 4 at a time spawning. Filled my pockets completely full of them in like 10 minutes...

Thank you for everyone who replied so far. I'm not going to worry about it anymore for the moment. I'm going to wait and see if maybe the later months will spawn them better, as it used to do that in New Leaf. Also gonna raise some more Nook Miles so just in case I need to go on tour to find them and I'm going to terraform later to see if that will help too. 🙂
