Spread around!

- 6 houses near the airport in the busy area of town, all in a line on sort of a main road

- 2 houses across the river from residential services, sort of nested alongside the water and still "in town" but on the outskirts of it

- 2 more rural villager houses on the second tier cliffs

- 2 player houses on the third tier cliffs

I've spread my villagers throughout my island. I prefer having it set up this way, since it does allow for my island to feel livelier.

My island is a rural farming commune so you're dang right they live close to one another. How else are they going to share the labor of harvesting fruit and working the fields and cook for each other?

At first I had them spread out everywhere. I liked it at first but when I started terraforming some houses were in crummy spots. I saw other people make residential areas so I thought, why not?

Each house has a yard with some furniture tailored to the occupant's personality. I also added a little garden for each yard and they have their favorite color in flower form surrounding them. 🥰 I also tried to match their fences with their color or personality if I could. For example, Norma has a hay fence and white flowers around her yard with a book and pillow because she loves reading... cheesy I know 🥺

Mine are in an area but it isn't a grid. I can't stand the really tight small grids. Right now I have them on a big street I guess? Its my 2nd level that leads to my 3rd lvl and 1st lvl of town. It goes from coast to coast. Noone has a yard persay but everyone's home has trees in the adjacent areas to help it feel forestry. There's also rivers in between.

If x is house - is open and r is river U is incline
UX-R- X-X-X-XU -R-UX-X-X- R-XU

It works well for me

Early game I put down wherever. Then I started to make a village - not crammed. Everyone was on the airport side of the river.

This has benefits if you are going for the Nook mile achievement for talking to villagers every day and DIY recipe collecting.

Now that I have that achievement and a lot of DIYs I am slowly spreading things out. Snake got a bamboo forest hideout and Angus got a flower farm. Dom got a gym.

Early game it makes a lot of sense to keep everyone tight, late game its about creating a custom scene you enjoy. There is no right or wrong way to do your island.

for right now they all live in a cozy neighborhood next to the residential services building. i agree with tastybells, as this is more convenient for talking to villagers everyday and collecting DIYs, but sometime in the future i may spread them out. who knows? ^_^

I have two neighborhoods with 4 villagers each, the remaining two live closer to resident services.

I wanted them spread out initially but it made designing my island really difficult.
Then I tried to make one big residential area but hated the way it looked so in the end I settled for something in between.

I have most of mine in a neighborhood situation, but they don't feel cramped at all imo. Giving them yards really helped me with getting items on my island for them to interact with that I couldn't figure out how I wanted to do before! For example, apollo has a microphone and I love when villagers visit his house to sing. Erik has his a snowy train set in his yard, Audie has a beach town that I've seen her lay in a few times. I find they use the yards more than they use the other things I've put separately on the island (cafe, pool area). I also have one part of the neighborhood that is more warm and suburban and then it travels up onto a cliff where things are a little bit more woodsy, but still organized. I've really enjoyed this.

And then there is Dobie who I decided is my lone wolf and I put him off on his own with a fishing hole. I think it suits him more than having neighbors.

I have a residential area but its really spread out far. Most of my villagers live on the left side of my island and live far apart from each other. Eventually I plan on moving them in a neat and organized urban setting.
