I like the idea of each villager having an area that suits them, but none of mine are staying permanently at this stage (maybe ever?) So it would be a nightmare!

I have mine in a tiered neighborhood, like a lot of others and, yes, the houses on the first row are all the same style! I love it. Maybe it's because I'm from England (where houses on the same street tend to share the same style). Now I live in the US and the street I lived on a few years ago had so many styles of house it hurt my eyes!

I'm still trying to figure this one out. I want each villager to have a yard, but I don't know how I'm going to go about doing this.

That's a good idea! I should try that
Do you happen to know the grid dimensions? 😅
I could be wrong because I’m doing this from memory, but each house is four spaces wide. I want narrow paths between my houses so I left room for one space between them. Depth is up to you because it depends how much space you want behind each house... I left quite a bit to make room for a garden behind each house. ^^;

I have my villagers in a few different areas. I have one group of 4, a group of 3, a group of 2, and Zucker is on the beach. Other than Zucker they all have the same spacing and have hedges around their house as a fence then specific stuff for each of them in their yard area. I have all of the areas set up a specific way with flowers, bushes, and trees planted in a pattern around the outside borders of their hedges because I like it to look cohesive in each area. It leaves me with a lot of space to design the rest of their island but they also don't feel too cramped together, I like it.

I have my villagers in the same area, I just prefer it that way cause I'm OCD like that lol. I'm quite happy how it turned out though!
I have thought about separating them into tiny groups but I'm not sure yet haha.

I have a couple that are near the entrance and then you follow a path to the upper right corner of my map where the rest of the homes are in a cliff-side neighborhood area ^-^

I have a residential area but all the houses have their own 9x7 area that include their house, fence to match home, greenery (bushes, flowers, trees, etc.) to give them their own character. All of them are the same square, but a lot of the fencing will vary to make it look different but still flow.
Then they are separated by a 2 (horizontal) or 3 (vertical) paths so they are still together but not mushed together to make a mess of different stuff crammed together. Horizontal is just enough to not really block the house & yard. Vertical I used middle of the path in parts to have flowers, street lights, and a couple trees. Adds color and makes it not as boring.
I also have a few water features around them, mini park, and farm/market/orchard around them to make it not so... plain, identical, boring~

I wanted to do some in residential then some in different areas of the island that match their theme (Genji & Kabuki in my bamboo forest for example. ) Oonce I got started, I noticed having them there just took away space I wanted to decorate the area with... so putting them all together with their own personal yards that have their own character was much better design choice for my island

I had a small residential area going at first with a few of my starters, just the nature of how the tutorial progresses, but I also have several villagers off in their own areas. I feel like it highly depends on what theme I feel like my villagers have, or whether they really have one at all. Some of the more generic (non-themed) villagers, like idk Punchy or Whitney, a residential area makes more sense for them (unless you're super creative and you assign them a theme within the lore of your island), but I wouldn't do that if I had vibrant, unique villagers like Ankha and Pietro.

Yes and no, I have a layered residential area, but they don't share a theme, each villager has a unique theme going for them, I divided into, 2-2+my house-3-3 houses per area, but they are close together.

i have three areas, one with two and two with three, then two villagers that lives close but not quite in the neighbourhood haha. it’s the best of both worlds for me! they all have a yard, i try to make their own little area for the neighbourhood to “share”, etc.

Some of them are spread out, while the rest is located in several insulae, one of which has access to a plateau.

The lower half of my map is residential while the upper half are shops and nature. I keep my villagers in an organized grid, but in the end it is going to work with my motif I will be working on.

I started out with my villagers spread everywhere, but now we're (including me) all located on the 2nd level. They're not aligned, and have their own yards, so I guess mine is a bit of both but I voted for the "common theme" option since we're all living on the same level. The flowers are all grouped together as well unlike the rest of my island which is just random.

In NL I had my neighbours all in a row (with the reset trick) and I didn't like it in the end, but having them all spread out so much meant planning was more difficult it's the best of both worlds for me. I like it a lot!

I enjoy having my villagers spread out all over the island too. Different areas of my island have different vibes. I made Rosie a cliff top estate with pink and purple nova lights and rocket lamps everywhere, along with the purple backlit pool and whirlpool bath. She has the pink DJ Turntable since she’s always talking about being a pop star. It’s so pretty at night. I’m working on special area for Tangy now lol. I need to craft a million orange end tables or whatever they’re called

I have a small neighborhood area with a community pool for 5 houses, 3 beach houses and then 2 houses spread out in the wooden area. So a lil mix of everything and I adore it ☺

I have mine mostly in pairs. Two together on western side by river, two together on eastern side by river, two on ground level against first cliff level, then on second cliff I have one west of waterfall and one east, then two more further down the cliff.

I visit their houses when I'm doing my tree shaking/fossil hunting. My town is arranged so I can do a "circuit" from town center, down to where airport is, over to the west, up cliffs, move east, then down a level, move west, then down again, then east again, then down along the eastern beach, hit the bottom beach, then up the center back to the town center.

My island concept is more "rural" so I don't want a "city" portion of just houses. I have a central area with Nook's, Town Square, Able's, Museum, and a little cafe area with a fountain, with an orchard to the south of Town Square. The rest is mostly trees and flowers with houses and decorations interspersed. I have a small "observatory" area up on the high cliff, a "scenic view" on the eastern high cliff, and a camp ground in the middle of the high cliff. I also have a large hybrid flower area between my two high cliffs.

I have little 2-3 villager clusters as I want my island to have a laid back and kinda tropical vibe which I don't associate with really compact suburbs. Also, I never want to be That Island Rep who lives in a remote palace at the end of a gold rose lined path while the villagers live in the equivalent of a parking lot. So everybody gets space for flowers, hobbies and chilling.

I have them clustered in the southwest of my map. Makes it so I have more usable space for other stuff.

On my main island, mine are spread out somewhat randomly. Most of my villagers do have at least one neighbor nearby, but the placement is natural and most have yards. The only villager that doesn't have a neighbor is Butch. He lives in a cabin in the woods close to the airport. I figure since he's cranky, he wouldn't want super close neighbors, but he would want to keep track of who comes and goes on the island.

On my second island, most of my villagers live on the beach, so their yards are much more of a shared space.

Like right now, they're pushed out of the way as if an animal crossing version of Moses appeared.

But I'm planning on squishing their homes together to mimic a downtown area.
