WHY DO PEOPLE STEAL?

Someone came to my town uninvited(i had gate open as i was doing a couple trades)! Normally i dont mind, we are all friends here(or so i thought). Stop by, chat? No big deal. I was putting somthing in my museum and someone stopped by. While i was going from museum to town to greet them. They walked to my town tree(its right next to gate) i keep my items there atm while i reorganize(normally trades are at train and leave so no one sees them anyway) And they picked up all my bamboo shoots(almost 30) and a few of my gyroids. *Someone else showed up(so it saved). But when he got there i got to my train at same time so i was there to greet my second guest. Well the first guest was standing there walking too. Then we Disconnected. Well when i walked to check retail i noticed my stuff was gone. Seriously? If you wanted them that bad i wouldve sold them or maybe even given them to you?! Why would you steal somthing? Especially somthing that i obviously would notice when walking around town?! People can be so rediculous! Back to waiting for shoots to grow >:(

I'm so sorry to hear that that happened to you! That was incredibly immature of the other player. I would recommend that, in the future, if you plan on having your gates open, maybe take items off the ground and put them in storage. I understand that you should be able to trust the people on your friend's list, but it never hurts to be careful. Despite all that, I hope you're able to gain back the items you lost.

NEVER leave items out with gates open. Keep gates closed, do stuff, open when ready to trade w/ someone, or just best friend people you trust from now on as some people are immature when in other peoples towns.

This is exactly why I won't open my gates to anyone, except people I know. I know most people are probably friendly and courteous, but I have no doubt that some jerk would eventually come over and wreck everything. It's beyond me why Nintendo didn't put some restrictions in place to prevent visitors from messing with stuff they shouldn't, when they've made such an open gate feature.

Well for sure it's someone on your friend list.Interrogation time. And yes they were immature. We're talking about stealing...IN A GAME.

Don?t leave stuff on the ground, you never know who might come by, sadly there?s a lot of immature thief?s on animal crossing,
I never invite people to my town unless I have been chatting with them for a while.

I get really hesitant about letting people into my town. I don't normally leave stuff laying around (however I don't trade much so I don't really have any reason to), but I'm always afraid of people chopping my trees and stomping on my flowers. I even get slight anxiety about visiting people because I didn't know it was bad etiquette to talk to villagers and I used to send them letters and stuff in other towns lol.
Oh my I digressed! I wish I had bamboo in my town to help you make up for the loss :( I hope I'm not friends with this person, maybe for now I'm ill be more careful about my own friends because I wouldn't want this to happen to me.

Talking to villagers is bad etiquette???? I always talk to the villagers I come across. It's not like I am out to steal them or something.

Plan your invites, friend. Should someone arrive w/out appointment; stay with him or her... it's a good time to get to know each other, so be a good host.

However, if you already have company, ask that person to leave. If they do not: quick Save, disconnect, & delete that FC.

Guys/gals, soooo many evil players will do this:

1. Monitor whom on their Friends List that has their gate open.

2. Select the town that has at least 1x visitor.

3. Arrive unannounced, running around w/ empty pockets causing tons of destruction & theft.

They will simply go down their Friends List until they're bored.

It happened, don't let it drag you down. Be more careful & it'll be good times over & over! =)

I think the safest thing to do is delete people you don't know from your 3DS after trading with them. I pretty much always delete people after a trade, and when they do come to my town I follow their every move. The moment you think something suspicious or bad will/may happen, just hit the wi-fi switch.

Honest question: can a visiting Mayor sway residents to move? Or must the resident be on the verge of moving out? Thanks!

Hmm.. I've added some people here but I've yet to leave my gates open randomly. I'm a bit selective when it comes to who I add just for this reason. People are jerks. I know it's a bit much to ask people to be respectful like I would be, but man...

I'm wondering if you may just be coming across varying etiquette standards. Anything on the ground when my gates are open is meant to be taken and it is pretty much understood with most of the people I've traded friends codes with that it is the same in their towns. If it's on the ground, it's free to pick up. Personally, if I saw that many bamboo shoots left out I would probably ask because you wouldn't normally see so many, but is it possible it was just a mistake by someone with different expectations?

I leave things on my ground that people are allowed to take, too, like fruit and silver tools that I already own. (especially those silver slingshots) I'm not saying that what they did was necessarily polite, though, because I personally would have asked before taking, and then when you said no, I'd probably warn you not to leave them on the ground.

At least all they didn't give you a virus to the point that you had to re-start your game. Which happened to me on AC:WW it was awful. (I just finished paying off my loan to.) :T

While I agree that it is completely wrong to steal, and its bad etiquette to pick up things while visiting another town, unless you get permission. I feel that putting someone on your friend code list and opening your gates is in fact "INVITING" them in. It's not like they can force their way into your game, you had to personally complete two specific and separate tasks to make it possible for someone to visit your town. I am also always amazed at the number of people who leave stuff laying around on their ground when they open their gates. I personally tend to leave town as soon as possible because I feel I'm going to get yelled at for accidentally walking over some crap that was laying on the ground or worse get accused of stealing something simply because I'm on the same screen as items laying on the ground.

And for those few who worry when someone talks to your villagers, or visits your museum or coffee shop. DON'T OPEN YOUR GATES.

Wow. That makes me scared of sharing my FC with people I don't personally know. I'm already too paranoid with my friends to the point they're scared of coming to my town lol (DON'T RUN ON THE GRASS! BE CAREFUL OF THE FLOWERS! NO PITFALLS DON'T HIT ROCKS, DON'T TAKE FOSSILS/GYROIDS, DON'T BRING AXES!!!)
Anyway, it's nice to know about town visiting etiquete. Does it vary a lot? Did the person know about your "rules"?

Honest question: can a visiting Mayor sway residents to move? Or must the resident be on the verge of moving out? Thanks!

you can ONLY make them move if they have already packed, and ready to leave, then you have to go to their house and talk to them until you get the option to invite the villager to your town, it?s the ONLY way..

Put your stuff in the locker. It's close to the station so you can easily grab it when someone arrives.
