Question re: tabletop items in villager homes

I had a question about items that villagers place on top of tables/dressers/etc and I thought that I'd ask the experts here. I know it is possible to replace these kinds of items, but is there anyway to remove them entirely? I'm curious if anyone has been able to successfully pull this off.

The only way I've found thus far is to wait and see if the villagers put those items up for sale in Re-Tail. Other than that, replacing them is the only way to change out tabletop items that I've found.

Ahhh, I see, I hadn't thought of that (typically my retail is filled to the max, so looks like I maybe need to clear out some space and hope I luck out!).
