For those of us who are trying to complete the art section of our museums, I was just wondering how many of you use internet guides in determining which of Redd's paintings is genuine. Or, do you consider it "cheating?"

When I first started out I swore off using internet guides, but I just got frustrated. What I'll do is if I know the title of the painting, I'll look up the real life one and try to see differences between that and the in-game one, but if I've never seen the piece in my life, I'll just look up a cheat sheet. I like this method. It's still a challenge in itself to try to determine if the piece of art is the fake.

How do you guys approach this?

I was an art history major before I switched my focus, so I was lucky enough to already be familiar with the pieces. After a few visits, I can now pick out the fake ones in a snap.

i use the art guide in liquefy's faq on gamefaqs. im too lazy lmao.

I useually check out the art guide on thonky whenever I'm unsure about a painting when redd is here.

When I first started playing ACNL i had no idea there were game guides. Yep. Don't laugh. After buying several fakes I started using Thonky's guide and imo do not consider it cheating. Just like preparing coffee orders at Brewsters. I want happy customers and do not want to waste hard earned bells from catching hundreds of bugs.

I don't think it's cheating. I'm really unfamiliar with art.

I used Thonky all the time in the beginning until I ended up memorizing the differences from doing it so often. o:

I'll only look at a guide if I already have a fake copy of everything Redd is selling for the day, since I'm also collecting forgeries for whatever reason. I'm not really concerned whether or not that's "cheating".

I don't consider it cheating, some i can recognize on sight if they are fake from prior knowledge but some i wasn't sure on, doesn't help that some of them are blurry imo (or i have bad eyes). I always buy the real painting to sell later/trade for other items.

I'm familiar with some of the sculptures enough to spot a fake. Not so much with the paintings. When I need to look up something I use the AC:NL wiki. I don't care if it's cheating.
It does seem strange to wonder if it's cheating to use a guide on a site where many of the conversations involve time travel and plot resetting.

I looked at thonky originally, but now after playing for so long I can tell which ones are fakes and which aren't despite not knowing the piece of art.
(and some of the fakes are a bit too silly to be real anyway - I think one of the fake ones has a carrot nose, for example)
