Question about system transfers

If I were to get a new DS and put in my old cartridge there, would my file be deleted? Or would I have to transfer my SD card as well in order to ensure that everything stays? I'm really confused and get irrelevant google searches ;-; I was thinking of getting a new DS, cycle my villagers there and get a new ACNL for my current DS for a new town! but I have no idea how to go about it with system transfers and all huhuhu ;n;
