Question about paths affecting where house plots are placed in new update.

TL;DR Will they move in directly next to a path? Do they leave 1 gap? If they do move in directly do they need a gap for their door?

Alright! I love the new update and I love that villagers will no longer move in on my paths.
But then I was thinking how this could help me more effectively chose where exactly each villager places their house - by using the paths to block locations where I do not want villagers to move in.

My question about this is what area would I have to leave empty for a villager to move in?
3x3? 4x3? 5x5?

At the moment my plots are set up like this:
(I don't want to time travel at the moment so I am unable to test myself)

X = A QR design
O = An empty space

I have seen one of my villagers move in directly next to a path but you may have to make sure there is a spot for their door if there is a path in front...

so maybe

I leave the one for the door, but I don't think that matters in the end, I do it just in case, but the answer is 3x3. I've moved in one villager after the other in a new town using that method. Good luck!

A villager successfully moved into the 3x3 spot with the single gap at the front but I can see now that they could move into a regular 3x3 as the house plot placed initially doesn't have a door.
