Question about Nintendo Switch save data

I was just wondering if anybody knew if Nintendo Switch games save on the cartridge or the player's Switch account.

So let's say I play my friend's Mario Kart cartridge on my Switch on my Switch account, then at some point I decide to buy my own. Will I have to start the game over if it's a new cartridge?

I hope that makes sense..

Your progress won't be saved in the game card. Instead, the data will be written only in your Switch's internal memory. The only way to transfer it to another Switch is to go on Settings, select the "Transfer User and Save Data" option and follow the instruction.
